Washable wipes

Ok, been using cloth nappies for about 3-4 months now & want to start using reusable wipes. I'm looking at The Nappy Lady website at the premium washable wipes & at some microfibre wipes on eBay. My question is, can I wash the wipes I use on dd's face with the nappies & bum wipes or should they be kept separate? Also, if they need to be kept separate I'm assuming different colours for bum & face would be best?

TIA Smile

Use flannels? Mothercare do packs as do ikea.

Wash at 60C. I use them on face first then bum if the bath or just bum. Use once, chuck in the wash, never have any problems.

ikea ones

Forgetfulmog · 27/06/2013 08:34

Thanks creature - do you put the face & bum wipes in the same wash though? I know at 60 deg that should kill everything off, but not sure if its ok to use bum wipes on face (clean obviously Smile). Am I making sense?

Yes same wash and yes use the same ones (clean obviously!). I occasionally chuck them in on a boil wash too but always at least 60C for the flannels.

Fab, thanks creature! Smile One last question, do you use plain water or essential oils on them?

In my opinion it's easier to just aim to was the wipes IN WITH THE NAPPIES

So I use any of the premium ones from nappy lady

THEY are fantastic

And separate
Cheap facecloths for the face which go in the normal wash

I prefer to wash my nappies at 40 degrees with very small amount of non bio

BTW I only have 20 washable wipes ....with the addition of a few very ld face cloths as bottom wipes ...that's plenty

spiderbabymum · 27/06/2013 09:48

Another tip ...you don't in theory need to DRY the wipes . Take direct from machine . Put n box with solution wet . Hey presto .

I actually do dry mine

We use lavender oil and it smells lush! A bit of camomile tea for teething days Smile

Hasitfallendownagain · 27/06/2013 13:26

I wash bottom wipes in with the nappies, and face/hand flannels in with my normal wash; I use white for bums and different colours for faces, and just use cheap flannels. The whole family use the face ones (not the same one obviously, one each!).

I don't like the idea of putting face flannels in with my nappy wash, but I think that's just me being squeamish, no real reason not to.

When I can be bothered I make up a box of wipes with lavender oil...but I change my nappies in the bathroom anyway, so I usually just run a wipe under the hot tap so it's nice and warm, as and when I need it.

blackteaplease · 27/06/2013 13:26

Flannels are a bit bulky for little bottoms. I use wipes that are towel on one side and fleece on the other. lots Botswana i think. Then i also chopped up a baby towel and hemmed the squares to make extra. I lobe them in the bucket with the nappies .

I use the idea ones for faces and they get popped straight into the washing machine and washed with whatever is in there.

blackteaplease · 27/06/2013 13:27

Lots Botswana? That is meant to say tots bots!

ZenGardener · 27/06/2013 13:29

I use those exact Ikea ones. They are fab and so cheap.

Choccywoccydodah · 27/06/2013 13:34

I bought a fleece blanket from ikea for £3 almost 2 years ago and cut it up into pieces. Still use them now Smile

Choccywoccydodah · 27/06/2013 13:35

I got about 25 squares out of one fleece....

Forgetfulmog · 27/06/2013 14:16

Wow thanks for all the tips ladies! Sounds stupid I know but I'd never even thought of chopping up a towel or fleece to use as wipes!

Chopped up a well used towel here (so towel was nice and thin). Worked brilliantly.

Xiaoxiong · 27/06/2013 16:11

We keep the basket of dry bamboo wipes next to the changing mat, and a squeeze bottle of water next to it. Grab wipe, squirt of water, wipe face/hands/bum, toss into nappy bucket to wash together with the nappies. Use another wipe to dry off if necessary (this is why we like to keep them dry and only wet them as we use them - DS can get wicked rashes if he stays wet).

When I make up the squeeze bottle I put a squirt of baby wash in the water when I remember - otherwise just use plain water - never thought of the lavender drops!

Xiaoxiong · 27/06/2013 16:15

We were given bamboo wipes as a gift, I would totally have gone down the fleece or towel route if we hadn't.

Query to Jim - did you hem or serge the edges of the wipes you cut from the towel? We're expecting DC2 and a few more wipes would be nice, and we've got a thin and well used towel ripe for sacrifice that DH tore the other day. However I worry it would all just unravel and fray into little bits once I start cutting...

Misfit13 · 27/06/2013 16:28

I used ' baby cloths' from Poundland. They're small and thin, so good for out and about, but big enough to do the job. They come in packs of 6 in a choice of colors, so you can have separate ones for faces, if you like. I did at first, but stopped bothering as he got older. I had no qualms about shoving towels etc in with nappies to make up a full load - after all, the idea is that everything comes out clean, isn't it? Oh, and always a few drops of lavender oil in the conditioner drawer :-)

CreatureRetorts · 27/06/2013 17:49

Sorry - went to work - just plain warm water for mine

Forgetfulmog · 27/06/2013 20:22

Misfit - yes that's what I was wondering. I do the nappies on a 60 deg wash anyway which in theory sterilises them. If I can put all the wipes in the nappy bin then it'll save my normal washing going damp & manky.

Thanks for all the tips. Someone mentioned about the wipes from The Nappy Lady - they were the ones I was thinking of getting. I don't live near an ikea & anyway it's dangerous when I go as I end up buying loads of hotdogs Hmm.

Thanks again Smile
