Is 6 months before baby goes to own room a minimum or exact date?

I'll probably sound very PFB but I like my ds sleeping in our room Blush. I like wakening up and hearing his little breaths and then the coos first thing in the morning. I can see him watching us through the cot and it's lovely!

It's not about me though, its what is best for baby! Dh and I don't want to leave it too late to move baby to own room, when he is aware of it iykwim?

I don't want him out though!

What have others done?

It's an advised minimum, if it works for you keep him with you as long as you like,

6 months is when the SIDS risk drops to a point where putting them in their own room is considered safe. But keeping them in with you for longer is fine too. Most people move them to their own room for space reasons, or because the baby is noisy and keeps them awake.

One of mine was in my room until he was 5!

Whatever works for you & your family...

oh, it's certainly a minimum not an exact date! nothing with babies is exact. Everyone does it differently and different things work for different babies (and different parents.

With DC1, we moved him to his own room at about 16 months. DC2 at about 12 months, and DC3 at about 12 months too. With DC2 and DC3, I spent a lot of time sleeping on the floor of their room until they settled.

The thing we did which was particularly helpful was to start settling them in their own room at the beginning of the night from about 8-9 months. Then when they woke up, we brought them into our bed. Then it wasn't much of a transition to begin re-settling them in their own room later

The only advice I'd give is - don't push something that's not working. If you're trying to settle a baby in their own room and they're very unhappy/unsettled, you can stop and try again a month or two later. There are many paths to success!

Noble is right. Six months is recommended due to SIDS. No reason not to keep him in your room of you are all happy with it. One of my friend four year old still co sleeps. Not for me but they are all happy!

I still have DD 11 months in with us, like you I like having her there, health visitor told us to move her and I asked mumsnet and got loads of helpful info, it's fine to keep your DS in with you as long as you like.

Aww. I moved dd into her own room at seven months .... Sobbing, that was me not her Blush

Keep him with you if you want. He won't still be there when he's 14 Grin

galwaygirl · 24/06/2013 14:44

DD was in with us until 22 months - DH would have liked to move her sooner but I couldn't bear it until I was forced to with the imminent arrival of DC2. Anyway, two months on she loves her room and her little bed and doesn't even want to come into our bed at all.
We slept in with her on a mattress initially, then her in the toddler bed and one of us on mattress. But there were no tears and she was fine with it, we were surprised and relieved at how easy it was and DH found he really missed her and slept in there more for himself than her after a while!
DC2 is here now and will probably be in with us for as long but we will see how things go - it'll be a lot longer than 6 months anyway.

There are no absolutes in parenting. Ever.

Thanks for the info, appreciated as ever!

It is neither, it is a guideline. You can move baby into own room at any age that suits baby, you and the family. My DS was in his own room at 3 weeks for various reasons.

sparklekitty · 24/06/2013 19:05

My DD is still in bed with us at 9mo. I'm not busting my ass trying to get her in her own cot/room when I love having her in bed with us (and she loves it too)

FadBook · 24/06/2013 19:17

This is a good website to read with some interesting literature and articles on co sleeping/baby or child being in close proximity of their main carer(s). Particularly in Asia and Africa it is really normal for children to be with you until toddler hood and beyond.

It is actually a very western thing to "get baby on their own room" quickly.

You do what suits you and your family.

You have options, many of them - like moving big cot in to your room (removing furniture out if no room), getting a co-sleeper or removing the side off the cot and pushing up close to bed (ensuring no gaps).

DD moved in her room around 11 months. I also moved a bed in her room for me as I wasn't ready but were acutely aware that DP's snoring was disturbing her Grin It was an option that suited us. Dd had me there if she needed me or slept on her own if she was happy. It was a nice balance and eased her in to her own room without being too stressful for either of us Grin

DS3 was 2.5yo before he moved out of our room - he was happy in his cot in there and didn't have anywhere else to go. Once he had a room of his own (DS1 was 15 and moved out into the caravan in the garden) he moved quite happily into his big boy room.
