Washable wipes: fleece, terry, microfibre or bamboo best?

What's the verdict? I borrowed some used terry ones from SIL but they are v rough on baby's skin. I made some from cut up flannels but they frayed. So I'm going to buy new ins from eBay.

Fleece are cheapest but I'm unsure if absorbency, cut rubbing off and will they fray as they are not hemmed...

Will terry ones just go hard again (I don't want to tumble dry every time just to fluff them up).

Is microfibre a good idea? What's the deal with bamboo?

Any experiences of these on was ability, softness, absorbency, fraying etc most welcome.

I have been using some nature babies wipes which are terry on one side, fleece on the other side. They are good as you can wipe the stubborn poo with the rougher side and the fleece is soft for the rest. Only prob is I don't have enough!

I also have made some fleece wipes (just cut up a piece of leftover fleece) and these seem good too, not frayed so far, although the terry is better for cleaning. I end up chasing little bits of poo around with the fleece (tmi sorry)

Good to know (and inevitable tmi!!) :) I thought the fleece might be more skippy...

Slippy, not skippy!

Bamboo is lovely and soft but takes ages to dry. Terry is my favourite. Got cheeky wipes from the nappy lady.

I used fleece ones. They are good as they don't require any drying

Kelbells · 24/06/2013 08:34

I've got a mix of bamboo and doublesided terry/fleece that I bought from an eBay WAHM... Have to say I reach for the bamboo every time, it's really good for poo... Grips well Smile... But it's so lovely and soft on DS nether regions, I'll definitely be buying more bamboo!
Don't worry about drying, there's no need, we just put ours straight back in a Tupperware box and top with lavender oil/ boiled water (camomile tea for nappy rash/teething)... they're never in there long enough to go iffy (have about 40 wipes)

I use flannels. Cheap as chips from Ikea. I use terry nappies and put vinegar in the machine to soften them. They are ancient and floppy though.

MirandaWest · 24/06/2013 09:01

I used fleece wipes and fleece liners. Still have some now, 6 years after nappies went :)

forevergreek · 24/06/2013 09:09

Can I ask how often you wash them? And do you just put flannels/ cloths in machine alone or do you add other items? And do you wash at 60?

I was considering using cloth wipes at home but not cloth nappies ( in an out/ flying/travelling/ etc way too often for them to be convinent), maybe just a washable nappy at night.
But surely 20 wipes and say 2 nappies doesn't fill machine?

Currently only do maybe 4 loads max a week including bedding and towels (2 adults and 2 toddlers). Have a 9kg machine so dont really want to run for just a few wipes at a time but assuming cant leave more than say 2 days without washing!? So doesn't seem v economical

notso · 24/06/2013 09:35

I wash every other day I use cloth nappies as well though. I rinse the nappies and wipes on their own first then add other stuff usually my 2 toddlers clothes or towels if I'm doing those.
I know some people don't like the idea of clothes being washed with nappies though but I'm not fussy.

I can honestly say I don't find reusables any more inconvenient than disposables when out and about. I currently have one in reusables and one in disposables and apart from remembering not to throw the cloth nappy away there is little difference!

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 24/06/2013 09:39

I use terry ones. I find anything else doesn't have enough grip for poo!

I have washable nappies and wash them with those, but then every once in a while I put them (clean) in with a normal wash with some softener.

Mine don't need to be dried as I use cheeky wipes - you just re-do the box with water and a few drops of lavender.

CelticPromise · 24/06/2013 09:40

I wash nappies once a week now we are in pants in the day. I chuck the wipes in with the nappies. They don't smell, I rinse off the poo in the toilet and keep them in a bucket with a lid. I also use them out and about, on holiday etc and although camping is a bit challenging I can't bear disposables now!

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom · 24/06/2013 09:41

Forever - I'd stick the wipes in a laundry bag and run them for a rinse, then wash them with whatever else you were washing. I'd asy that, as long as you are keeping the dirties in a nappy bin with a lid, every 3 days would be ok for washing.

stargirl1701 · 24/06/2013 15:02

I use bamboo cheeky wipes on DD's bottom. I bought 2 packs as they do take ages to dry. I don't like to use them without drying in between.

I use microfibre cheeky wipes on DD's face. Just one pack. I don't mind them never drying as they come out of the machine virtually dry as it is.

mrsmartin1984 · 24/06/2013 19:35

I use cloth nappies and wash every 3/4 days with the wipes in. I use bamboo nappies in evening and at night and have between 6-10 in each wash. depending. I use a full load. If it was just the bamboo ones it would be less then half of one.
