Filling landfills or wasting water....

For DS2 a friend has gone 80% of way to persuading me to use the washable nappies but DP still thinks that we should concentrate on saving water this summer and this would surely create another couple of loads a week if not more.

What d'ya reckon?

am typing one handed so can't link but have seem lovely recycled fabric terries. makes me want to get out my sewing machine...

Fillyjonk · 04/06/2006 19:48

oh smellen, we use squares too, with tots bots fleecy wraps. They are fantastic, I have no idea why they are not more popular.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2006 20:11

i'd have given squares a go but dh has a disability which causes him to have problems w/anything very fiddly. as it is, he stays home w/dds and likes cloth nappies w/aplix fasterners and poppers.

dd2 is a tots bots (made in scotland :))/kissaluvs girl w/motherease wraps.

and one fleecy tots bots one for night.

I havn't had time to read the rest of this thread but I don't use any extra water or detergent with my nappies as I put them in with my towels which I would be washing anyway.

Cappucino · 05/06/2006 12:51

buy the damn nappies

expatinscotland · 05/06/2006 12:55

i put dd2s in w/towels and bedding I'd have washed anyway, too. at 60 w/a handful of soda crystals and vinegar in the softener tray.

Cappucino · 05/06/2006 13:45

expat I think you should change your name to SodaCrystalsLady Wink

expatinscotland · 06/06/2006 10:17

Hmmm. . . that's not a bad idea, Cappucino Wink.

Elibean · 06/06/2006 10:26

expat, what kind of vinegar (as fabric conditioner), please?

expatinscotland · 06/06/2006 10:27

just plain old sarson's white stuff, bean. i buy it by the 5L jug b/c i use it all over the house.

i use about half a tea cup full w/a few drops of either lavender or tea tree oil.

Elibean · 06/06/2006 10:41

Thanks! What else do you use it for? (you're not one of those extraordinary ladies on tv who know how to clean everything in the world, in disguise, are you? If so, I want your autograph Wink)

expatinscotland · 06/06/2006 10:54

i use it as a shower spray - just put it in a spray bottle w/some essential oils to disguise the smell. it keeps the mould down on the tiles.

to clean the floors, w/hydrogen peroxide to clean high chairs and plastic toys, to clean the windows, etc.

Elibean · 06/06/2006 11:02

Thanks. I hate all the smelly power cleaning things, vinegar and lavender sounds much - well, cleaner.

TooTicky · 06/06/2006 15:17

expat - I started using soda crystals in the washing machine and shortly after 2 of my 4 children developed itchy bits. Do you think it could have been caused by the crystals? I stopped using them just in case.

expatinscotland · 06/06/2006 15:23

It could be, ticky. They can irritate the skin.

Best to dry your nappies on the line so the sun gets rid of stains.

TooTicky · 06/06/2006 15:27

Thanks expat. I bought meself some vinegar today so hopefully the nappies will be a little less crunchyGrin

Elibean · 06/06/2006 16:22

Grin I bought some vinegar too. Should we start a club?

SoupDragon · 06/06/2006 16:24

"so the sun gets rid of stains" personally I find the "sun gets rid of stains" thing a load of rubbish. Unless I'm meant toleave stuff out there for days on end.

expatinscotland · 06/06/2006 16:29

it's worked for me so far! i used MILs washing line to great effect.

i was reading the totsbots brochure today, and they recommend running hte nappies thru w/bio washing powder if they're heavily soiled . . .

SoupDragon · 06/06/2006 16:43

I've never had it remove stains from the boys white Tshirts (chocolate and stuff):(. That aside, I have got a full line of nappies ATM and I felt a certain sense of satisfaction. And then slapped myself and told myself to get a life.

expatinscotland · 06/06/2006 16:50

Two more days till I get my hands on 6 brand new Kissaluvs and I can go out and get a lovely TotsBots fleece wrap for night.

How sad am I :)?

she just looks so cute all sprawled on her change matt w/her pretty nappy on.

SenoraPostrophe · 06/06/2006 16:52

sd - the sun doesn't get rid of all stains, but does noticeably reduce poo stains. perhaps being 2000 metres high and near the med helps with that though.

Elibean · 06/06/2006 18:05

I'm a few hundred yards from the Thames, but putting dd's muslins out on bushes to dry did get rid of virtually all stains. Never tried poo though, or chocolate, just carrot puree and the like...
You do need SUN sun though, not grey, teeny bit of half a ray sun.

Smellen · 06/06/2006 19:07

Personally found the washing line on a sunny (or even overcast) day did get rid of newborn mustard coloured stains from terry nappies.

Whilst on the eco-friendly-cleaning-subject, tried lemon juice to de-scale the kettle and it worked a treat. Just leave in overnight and rinse out next morning. Much nicer than horrible chemical descalers.

Yep, I gotta get a life!! Smile
