What's the official SIDS guidelines for this? Is this allowed or should I throw them out and buy new for dc2?

Also if they're not allowed to be reused, what about sleepsuits? Do I need to buy new for these also??

There is a thriving market in second hand baby clothes, and most younger siblings wear hand-me-downs. Mattresses need to be replaced but I have never read anything suggesting that you need new sheets.

Of course you can reuse them! You can reuse mattresses too.

You can't hot wash mattresses hence a theoretical risk.

Can't see any problem with sleeping bags.

I reused my totally sealed mattress as the cover could be washed.

Pretty sure the SIDS guidelines refer purely to mattresses, because they can't be washed. If you can shove it in a washing machine at 60 degrees then any putative nasties will be gone.

NCT sales have strict safety rules about whsf you can't sell, but are quite happy to sell second hand bedding, sleeping bags, sleep suits etc.

Actually the crib mattresses did several DCs as DF and me passed it back and forth to various siblings.

I tried to get a new one the first time I borrowed it, but pre eBay, it was too odd a size.

Current FSID/NHS advice on mattresses is just that they should be firm, well fitting, clean/in good condition and waterproof.

I think we can get too worked up about SIDS guidelines.
The important things are don't smoke, breastfeed
Don't get into a situation where the baby could get squashed/smother (sleeping in a chair or sofa, loose covers that could go over the face)
Baby on it's back and sleeping near you

Fretting too much about dummies, mattresses etc isn't going to make much difference if you observe all the important stuff.

Thank you all for the helpful advice.

I contacted the Lullaby Trust for advice on this a little while ago. They said it's fine to reuse sleeping bags, just put them through a hot wash first.
