dirty nappy

Right mums.... what's normal???

DS is FF (Aptamil Pepti1) and hus generally had 1 dirty nappy each day, usually during the same feed each day.

He is 6m and has recently started BLW. We tried purees but was finding that I couldn't fit them in (before milk he then refused milk, after milk he refused food, and waiting an hour meant he was getting tired and grumpy) so I decided to hold off and do BLW

So for the last week or 2 i've been sitting him in his chair and giving fingers of toast or cucumber, carrots etc... All fin when he'll tolerate being in the chair without whining that is

Yesterday I gave him a soya yoghurt (DF weaning at cons advice) and he had just under half a pot

YUCKY BIT
Overnight he pood - never pood overnight before, usually at 10am milk feed) and it was yellowy/green and a bit mucoussy?!?
Put him down for nap at 8.45 and when he woke at 10 he had pood a little more and again yellowy/green and mucous with black seed things (possibly the seeds from the soya yog). Then got to baby group and he'd done a small amount again at 11.00 and then and again at 12.30 before leaving baby group....?

I realise people probably don't want to read about the contents of my sons nappies but please could one of you experienced mums please point a first timer in the right direction with whats normal and not.

Thank you

sounds like dihorrea to me. When our DC have had it we've been advised to stop milk and dairy for 24 hours. Not easy when that's your childs main food source!

Kafri · 14/06/2013 13:35

Oh, I will add that for the last few days he's been fussing a bit over his bottles - I believe he's drinking enough but generally fussing a bit over drinking them.

Funny how do I stop his milk completely for 24 hours?

there is no need to stop his milk and up to date advice is to continue with milk feeds anyway for diarrhoea. It could be a reaction to the soya yoghurt as children who react to cows milk also have a high chance of reacting to soya too.

Diarrhoea is watery and smelly so doesnt sound like the mucousy poos your lo is doing. Is he teething as that can sometimes cause horrible nappies too?

Kafri · 14/06/2013 13:46

He has recently cut his top 2 teeth and is possibly starting with the second bottom 2 (got the first bottom 2 at 16w)
It's certainly different from his usual nappies, wouldn't say worse smelling but different smelling???
If it's a reaction to the soya yoghurt, should I just knock any yoghurt on the head for now??

you could take the yoghurt out of his diet for just now and see if things improve. You can always reintroduce it at a later date and see if the same thing happens again.

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/06/2013 14:58

ilove that was also the advice with 3yo DS2 however when the DC had continuous diarrhoea the only thing which stopped it was cutting out dairy. I agree though very difficult in a 6mo

SecrectFarleysNibbler · 15/06/2013 18:14

nothing is normal!!

Kafri · 17/06/2013 17:08

lol,

Well, he still has the remnants of the runs. Still having numerous dirty nappies but tiny amounts at a time now.

Have spoken to GP today who didn't seem concerned as he is eating enough of his milk to not get dehydrated.

Sound like teething nappies to me.

omama · 17/06/2013 18:39

Op my ds is also dairy free (cows milk ontolerance) & we found he had the same reaction to soya yoghurt (& sometimes 1 yog could cause runs for a couple of days). As ilovepower says, many babies who are cows milk intolerant can also be soya intolerant too. If he's well in himself except for loose nappies it sounds like its the yogs. If he's unwell then more likely a bug. Hth.x

Kafri · 17/06/2013 22:09

We've knocked the yog on the head and just waiting for his system to get back to normal.

He has four teeth so far and has never had loose nappies with them - it started in the early hours of the morning after he tried soya yog so I think I'm putting it down to that

The only other thing I noticed was in the few days running up to the runs starting he had been coughing but he hadn't seemed unwell and it wasn't a proper cough - it sounded more like he had found he could make this noise and was practicing rather than a full cough but I guess there is the possibility that it was a cough and he had a bug of some sort.

Oddly enough he's been a lovely baby on himself since this started and to be honest he's never been a happy baby - very whiny and difficult to please to put it mildly - but he's been rather chilled out and placid these last few days.

We're still on regular nappies but the amount is tiny now - TMI- bit like he's passing a bit of wind and just pooing a little with it so hopefully he's over the worst.

Right so another TMI...
Soya yog was last Thursday tea time.
Runs started last Friday so a wee k ago.

Now he's having tiny amounts but literally all the time. Is this usual for a baby. The contents ATM are a very small amount of looser poo but with bits in that are probably best described as like when you accidentally leave tissue in a pocket in the wash. Not a great description but its the best I can do.

It's been like this since Monday/Tuesday I'd say.

He had a couple of days where he's had less mill than normal(but still 'enough'),a couple where he shad how usual and then today he's screamed for milk with quite some urgency. Don't know if its relevant bit thought it worth adding in for the sake of getting the right advice.

Thanks again.
