Which "bad words" does your five year old know?

Reading on a German discussion board I am stunned again about how different things seem to be there, or is it just me?

They are discussing children's knowledge of swearwords and crude expressions for sexual intercourse etc., and the majority agrees that children of Kindergarten age (so between three and sex) will hear these words and possibly even know their meanings.

Now dd1 doesn't know any bad words apart from possibly "bloody". And in school they don't seem to be used around the playground either...
or if they are, she hasn't said any of them at home, which I think she would, as she comes home all outraged to report if a boy in her class has said "pants" or something. Grin

DS (6) doesn't know any swear words. He's deaf (wears hearing aids but still hearing impaired even with them) so wouldn't over-hear them. He has fabulous reading, though, so is starting to pick up some bad language through reading. (We parted with our Viz collection now.) He knows the usual naughty words (poo, bum etc) but nothing worse yet.

Bloody 'ell's his favourite.

I don't think mine know any. Lots of toilet words but they regard them as silly, not rude. Ds is 6 and dd is 4. Dd did come home from nursery saying 'oh my God', and we just said it wasn't a nice thing but didn't react, and it was only the once.

Dd is so sweet - she always says, 'Oh nuts!!'

Mine knows all of them Blush But none of the meanings, he only knows mum says them when trying to get shoes on or suffering bad drivers or every 28 days.

but never ever uses them, thank the Lord. I have told him that only I am allowed to use them as I am from London and they are London words and that one day when he's older he'll thank his mum for inadvertently teaching him to swear properly.

DS1's own range of expletives amounts to Poo Poo head and Nincompoop.

my 2 year old has taken to saying bloody arse or bloody pants all the time. The shame. eg 'shut up you bloody pants'. or 'what you doing, you bloody arse'. the bloody he's got from me & dh mostly dh. the arse, from ds1 who mis-read toys 'r' us as toys arse and thought it hilarious when we explained his mistake.

Going to be difficult to break as his 2 brothers collapse in fits of giggles everytime he says it.

He is a right stroppy sod too which doesn't help.

emkana, what's this german discussion group?

In ch must say, shocked to hear the kids using 'arsehole' a lot, eg age 5 & 6. Don't know any other German swear words, so maybe living in blissful ignorance. Maybe you should teach me them emkana, so I know what to look out for. Actually, could you? They could, probably are, effing and blinding in front of me & me being totally ignorant of the fact.

My DD 2.5 said her first swear word last week. I must have said bloody Hell Jessica to her because I heard a bloody Hell Mummy back to me. I can't even remember what I was annoyed about now - but it did make me smile - luckily she didn't she me. I haven't said it since, so I guess she has forgotten.

The funny thing is the same day she copied a word from DH - absolutely..

Just shows which ones uses the is the best role model.

Feistybird · 06/06/2006 21:08

as in swear words, DD1 knows 'bugger', from me unfortunately. She would never say it, but I know she knows it.

hex · 06/06/2006 21:10

my dd1 (aged 5) came home from school the other week and said that a boy in her class had said 'crecksy' to the teacher who had apparently severely reprimanded him. It took us ages to work out that he'd actually said 'sexy' (though we didn't enlighten dd1). She now refers to him as the boy who says 'crecksy'.

Ulysees · 06/06/2006 21:13

DS2 is 5 and knows allsorts of bad words. Thankfully they haven't mentioned he uses them in school. I agree with not making a big fuss, I just calmly tell him not to say them and he doesn't much.

emkana · 06/06/2006 21:21

ernest - would love to teach you German swearwords Wink, but I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with what the latest words in Kindergarten are. And they do seem to change over time! Will have a think, okay?

The German discussion group is on www.rabeneltern.org, click on Forum. It's a bit attachment parenting-y.

thanks emkana. Now suspicious if every word they're saying to each other.

sandyballs · 07/06/2006 16:06

Bloody bum hole is very popular with one of my DDs Blush

tallmummy · 07/06/2006 16:10

Sadly ds1 (6) and ds2 (5) have discovered the words turd and butt!

Olihan · 07/06/2006 16:17

Ds is 2.5 and his favourite trick at the moment is to shout 'BOLLOCKS' at the top of his voice in really inappropriate places. Unfortunately, most of our friends think it's funny and our families do a 'Shock what did you say?' type reaction which he loves. I'm quietly hoping he'll grow out of it or forget about it. BTW it's dh's favourite expression, nothing to do with me. I'm dreading him mixing with older kids because he picks up language instantly and pronounciation perfect.
