nursing chairs

I am expecting our second child and someone recently recommended a nursing chair as one of her best purchases. I've looked them up online and I've found some for between £100 and £150 which seems quite good value to me. I particularly like the idea of one that rocks slightly so that I might be able to sit down and rock the baby rather than constant walking during those long sleepless nights. What do you think? Out of all the options online it's hard to work out what's a good one and what's not, wondering if anyone has had one and has any recommendations.

2 words: Ikea Poang

You're welcome Smile

Second that!

HeadFairy · 10/06/2013 15:48

My mum and dad bought my a John Lewis one and we bought the footstool to go with it when ds was about 3 months old. I love it. Ds took forever to feed so I used to doze off in it while feeding him at night. DD now has it in her bedroom as our bedtime story chair. It's really too big but she loves it and I still love how comfy it is!

Just looked up the Poang chair.... our one is like this and I really liked having the footstool with it (I could never bf unless I had one foot up on something, kind of like strumming a guitar :o) and the pockets at the side are very handy, though I suppose you could make something to go over the arm if you're handy with a sewing machine.

Titsalinabumsquash · 10/06/2013 15:53

I have that JL one.. I've used it about twice, I am lazy so bf DS laying down whilst falling asleep

helloitsme · 10/06/2013 16:13

i like the look of the glider chair... i like the way it is so padded and my three year old could also sit in it and relax/read stories etc...but there's lots on the net that look just the same....the JL one looks nice, but is twice the price of some on the net (mind you, I am not in any way nifty with a sewing machine, and the pockets on the arms do look extremely handy...)

We bought the Poang with sheepskin covers. Marvellously snuggletastic.

I also liked that we could fit it in with our regular furniture once out of the boys' bedroom. the gliders just screamed BOOBMILK to me. They've probably got quite a good resale value though.

KatoPotato · 10/06/2013 16:30

If your near Glasgow I have an almost new chair with glider stool going free!

lynniep · 10/06/2013 16:42

We have a nursing chair. I never actually nursed in it, as I found it uncomfortable for breastfeeding. Having said that though, I've always used it to read to them so it was worth the money as still using it 6 years late for DS2. The footstool has been in the loft for half a decade though.

Madratlady · 10/06/2013 16:54

Can someone enlighten me to how a nursing chair is different to a regular chair? I'm assuming there must be something about them that I'm missing. I'm pregnant with dc1 so I'm trying to work out what we will definitely need and what would just be nice to have.

curryeater · 10/06/2013 17:01

Madratlady, if you are trying to trim what you need and haven't bf before I would wait and see if you want one. Unless you have a space in your house which you have earmarked for a big comfy chair already.

I learnt to bf dd1 sitting cross legged against the bedstead with a pile of pillows in my lap; I learnt to bf dd2 lying down with her against me. Neither needed a chair and I was glad not to need anything special, as we had no money for it, nowhere to put it, and didn't miss anything when we went away.

RuckAndRoll · 10/06/2013 17:02

Ikea rocking chair for me too, with footstool. It's the only way I can get comfy whilst pregnant, the sofa is a torture device.

Word of warning, make sure you sit in a few before buying, you will find they all have different height arms and backs so could be really uncomfy if you get the wrong one.

helloitsme · 10/06/2013 17:02

madratlady, look at the link which headfairy gave. one of my friends said it was the best thing she bought and that it saved her walking around with her baby at night as the baby responded well to her sitting in it and rocking, and it was much more relaxing for her. she also said the arms etc were much more relaxing for feeding as they were exactly the right height. however, as you see from this thread, everyone has come up with their own solutions! (I think I would like to go and sit in one and see what i think, glad to know they are available at JL)

Have a look on eBay!

We bought our gliding nursing chair with matching gliding footstool for 40 pounds.

PeterParkerSays · 10/06/2013 17:20

A nursing chair has a wider seat, so an older sibling can sit along side you whilst feeding. It also has a taller back and an air bag thing in the back which can be inflated / deflated to support your back.

I got mine off eBay, and it was one of the best purchases we made. DS is now 3 but it's still in his room as he can climb up onto it easily.

HeadFairy · 10/06/2013 18:42

The thing I liked about my glider chair was that the arm rests were at the perfect height so I could rest my elbows on them and both dcs were at the perfect height for feeding.

Also the back is quite high, I used my v cushion as a neck rest and I could sit in there for hours, which I had to do quite a few times.

Wait till your baby gets here, mine has rather surprisingly never needed walking around at night (my first was terrible for it!).

helloitsme · 11/06/2013 00:20

thank you! am delighted to know the three year old co-sitting thing actually works, and i love the idea of disgustingly comfortable! have checked ebay, as ever, NOBODY in my area ever sells anything...or that's what it feels like, so I need to look at deals that include delivery.....thanks Katopotato for the offer of a free chair near glasgow....i did live near there once, a long time ago, but now sadly distant.....

Itallfeegle - I am near Bristol...and thanks for the links with specific chairs, it's food for thought. I know it sounds silly, but I hadn't even thought of going and trying out the chairs in a shop until I started this thread - I'm so addicted to the virtual world of the internet! But thanks Miaow, because I've looked it up and there is a Kiddicare which I could get to, so I'm thinking of going and checking them out...

If I was feeding in the night or first thing in the morning I used to just sit on the edge of the bed with a pillow on my knee, worked perfectly.

If you're definitely getting a chair then I've heard Ikea Poang is good too.
