I have never heard as much rubbish as i have heard since i had my baby.

Things i get a lot-
What is HE called? (He is a girl and always wears pink)
Aww is she a big sister (said when she was obviously new born)

Am i the only one who has a child that people constantly think is the opposite sex?

Oddly enough, I've had three of the things mentioned below - "Are they yours" - Yes, I distinctly remember giving birth to them, "Have you had her hair permed" - No, she's 15 months old. "Are they twins", no - they just both have NATURAL curly hair, from my DH's side of the family and they are 5 and 3 (and a foot in height different).

But, my personal all time favourite...........

"Push"

What the bl*y hell do you think I'm doing you old bag, lying here for the sake of it!

It never fails to amaze me that some people will say 'is it a girl' when the said dd is wearing a bright pink coat and frilly dress.

SenoraPostrophe · 05/02/2004 13:58

Nutcracker - people in Spain say that to me all the time because dd doesn't have her ears pierced. They also say "why doesn't she have her ears peirced?"

Not to me, but I was in the pub one lunchtime and someone had brought in their new baby.
There were a couple of men at the bar who knew the Mum and went over to say hi. One of them, after prodding it for a couple of minutes, turned to the Mum and asked "Does it not say owt?" I was in hysterics!

Mum2Ela · 05/02/2004 14:23

'Can you go and have a bit of a wee and come back?'

After going to 20 wk scan with DD and being told my bladder was TOO FULL!

I ask you - a bit of a wee - how hard is that?!

SenoraPostrophe · 05/02/2004 14:37

how about stupid things I have said?

When in hospital having ds the woman in the next room asked me to show ds to her mother (it was a general geanecology ward). I did and when leaving said (to 18 hour old ds) "say bye bye". They looked at me like I was mad! I suppose I was - so used to saying it to dd I suppose.

when dd with Down's syndrome was born my father (who is usually a very intelligent bloke) in all seriousness asked me whether it'd been caused by the birth (homebirth, precipitous delivery). Yeah right, she saw the pattern on the bathroom floor whilst emerging and decided to change her genetic make-up.

hercules · 05/02/2004 20:44

When I told my mum I was getting married to an Asian (I am white) she exclaimed
But you'll never be able to hsve children!!!!!

btw we have 2.

Coddy · 05/02/2004 20:45

My MUm on learning that ds1 (10 months) likes to lick a finger dipped in Diet coke once in a blue moon

"But he will have teeth like a Peruvian Indian"!!

Coddy · 05/02/2004 20:45

2under2 - did that comment hurt?

Eeek · 05/02/2004 20:58

On returning to work and seeing a work friend for the first time. She said, "Oh, glad to see you, how's Thomas?" And I had to say, well, ds is fine but his twin, Thomas, died. After a bit of a gulp I thought it was really funny but she nearly died.

Coddy · 05/02/2004 21:00

this is becoming really sad.

Mine's trivial: 'He hasn't got much of you in him, has he?' Well, duh, just 50 per cent of his genes.

HiddenSpirit · 06/02/2004 01:49

I seriously think I would have knocked her out maryz.

Mine is not so much as what was said but is implied. My mother (on the rare occassion that I phone her) will (eventually) ask how DS1 & DS2 are, but not DD! This is because I am not DD's real mum and because she hasn't met DD yet (haven't seen mother for nearly 3 years now, thank god!). It was the same when she asked for photos of the kids. I asked her if she wanted a photo of the 3 of them together, or each of them on her own. She said to me on phone, "No just a pic of DS1 & DS2!

Probably thousands of other horrible things said to me by her too. Charliecat can vouch for the type of person my mother really is!

sis · 06/02/2004 11:23

maryz, that is really awful! did you manage to stay civil - I don't think I would have bothered trying!

motherinferior · 06/02/2004 14:11

Dd1 dropped her soft toy on the muddy pavement this morning. I quite frankly did NOT need a total stranger to stop and tell me we should take it hoome and wash it.

Pimpernel · 06/02/2004 14:50

When I was on maternity leave, I bumped into a colleague in town, who looked at dd and said "Oh she's started smiling already? How lovely!". "Er, yes, she's nearly six months old now, she's been smiling for quite a while....", I replied.

motherinferior · 06/02/2004 19:22

I got asked 'can you feel it kicking yet' a week before dd1 was due.

hmb · 06/02/2004 19:29

My mother said to me , after I lost my first pregnancy at 12 weeks, 'Never mind, what you never had you can never miss'. What I still find amazing is that she said this even though she lost her first pregnancy to a mc.

tamum · 06/02/2004 19:32

I know the feeling hmb- not quite as bad, but I miscarried at 8 weeks and my mother told me how she and her friend were discussing what a shame it is that pregnancy tests work so early now. If it had happened in their day, apparently, I would never have even known I was pregnant. Yeah, right. Why precisely did they think I did the test?

hmb · 06/02/2004 19:35

Hugs, Tamum, life sucks sometimes, doesn't it? The mc left me infertile and I needed surgery and hormone treatment to sort things out. The only 'good' thing to come out of the whole sorry situation is that dd was born 2 years to the day that I lost the first baby. I see it as mother nature trying to make it up to me. Now it is a happy day.
