12 day old heavy breathing

ds is 12 days old and tonight his breathing seems more laboured than usual. appears fine in every other respect:feeding fine, alert when awake, not fussy or crying...

whereas usually I'm bending down checking for signs of breathing, tonight his chest/stomach is visibly moving up and down.

midwife signed us off today so can't ring them for reassurance Sad

should I stop panicking and try to go to sleep?

Check it out, if your baby's chest is moving more or tummy bulging then ribs showing etc then it could be broncholitis. The smaller the baby the harder they have to work to breathe so get it checked out. No one will mind checking your lovely baby and no one will think you are bothering them.

think the health visitor just said ring 111 if I had any worries?

Get it checked. Breathing comfortably is of great importance. Better safe than sorry. Smile

Do that or if you are really worried that your baby is working hard to breathe then just go straight to a and e (even if they just tell you there is no problem they see you quick) they will check your baby and monitor sats if need be.

It is better to be safe, hope all is ok.

I was going to suggest a&e... Never leave it to chance when it comes to breathing....

Have had this with DC3 who.is 20 days. It was happening after a feed and when really warm weather started - he settled hinself after half an hour. Got me all worried though and ready to call for help. Like others have said if you are concerned it is always best to get it checked.

just got back from hospital. breathing fine whilst we were there (although it's heavier now he's back in basket!) and they gave him a good check over - everything seems as it should be. doc just said that newborns breathing can be erratic and he seems fine - might just be a slightly bunged up nose making him work harder. glad we went. can hopefully get some sleep now before he wakes up for feed!

thanks again for replies x
