Anyone wash nappies at 40 degrees?

I use a 60 degree wash but the machine is playing up on that cycle. Don't really want to pay to have it fixed at the moment could I get away with 40 degrees and vinegar or tea tree oil in the conditioner bit?

haven't done it myself. when our machine broke i went to a launderette till it was fixed.

RedZuleika · 25/05/2006 21:47

I don't think that 40 degrees is hot enough to make them hygienically clean. Just my opinion.

lunavix · 25/05/2006 21:47

We always did. Was told when first bought totsbots that it would lengthen their lifespan. Since found out you're meant to wash on 60 to kill germs but we never had any problems.

The Nappy Lady has a page about it \link{http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Advice/NappyTip.asp?NappyTipID=10\here}.

She basically says you can do 40 degree washes, but should do a 60 degree one once a week.

FillyjonktheSnibbet · 25/05/2006 21:51

yeah. both my kids are alive.

Piffle · 25/05/2006 21:53

Gosh with ds I cold washed (is v common in NZ) and he is very robust.

northender · 25/05/2006 21:59

Thanks all, I think we did them at 40 for ds but can't really remember . Will give it a go.

I read on one of the nappy sites that 40 is fine with some napisan or 60 without.

NannyL · 25/05/2006 22:42

i would with napisan which kills all the gerns anyway!

LeahE · 25/05/2006 22:59

I normally do 40 with very occasional 60s. No one has died of anything hideous yet. We use disposable liners -- don't know if that makes any difference.

juuule · 25/05/2006 23:29

Yes. You might find they are still a bit stained but with a dash of soda crystals and vinegar they should be sanitised.

CorrieDale · 26/05/2006 08:43

I generally do 40 degrees (disp liners) and a blast at 60 every now and again.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/05/2006 08:54

I do that too - 40 degrees for most washes and then 60 occasionally. You don't need tea tree oil or whatever.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/05/2006 08:56

to clarify: unless you really need sterile nappies there is no need for tea tree oil, nappisan or anything else. they don't eat their dinner of their nappies do they? You do need to wash at 60 or above for babies under 3 months, but that's it.

PiccadillyCircus · 26/05/2006 09:00

I wash at 40 degrees. And I don't use napisan. And stains come out.

Laura032004 · 26/05/2006 09:33

I would wash at 40 quite happily - it's only their own bugs, so unless you need to guard against thrush or they've got a tummy bug, you should be fine. And then you could just use napisan.

I washed at 40 degrees quick wash all summer when staying with my parents in Cyprus as I figured that the sun would kill any bugs as the nappies were drying. No problems at all.

FlameBoo · 26/05/2006 09:38

I do 40 most of the time (with a splash of vinegar every few washes), and just give them the occasional 60 blast.

I vary between fleece and disposable liners, and both children seem to be doing ok. No rash unless I haven't changed poo quick enough (and both do that in disposables too, they just react to their poo very quickly), and no general upset tummies or anything.

Tatties · 26/05/2006 09:52

My ds only poos about twice a week (TMI Blush) so if the nappies have only been weed on I wash at 40, if they've been pooed on I wash at 60. I do think they smell fresher when I've washed at 60 though.

UniSarah · 26/05/2006 19:39

40 degree wash is the normm here too, occasional 60 degree but I don't put wraps in at 60. some times the poohyest flease liner will be a bit stained after a 40.

hana · 31/05/2006 14:24

another one who washes at 40 and the occasionaly 60. stains come out with sun, a few haven't but they are still clean. so glad I can hang them outside again after the winter

pesme · 31/05/2006 14:40

dd is only in nappies at night so just pee. i only wash them at 30. i win!

nappyaddict · 13/09/2006 16:21

i always wash at 40. we have babaloo's and the site we bought them from recommended that temperature wash at 40

i don't use tea tree or lavender or anything as my nappies are coloured and it affects the colour but i would if i only had white or cream ones.

i'm another fan of line drying as much as possible, but if not then i line dry inside on an airer. i don't radiate or tumble dry as this can damage them in the long run.
