Best reusable for a newborn?

DC2 is due in a couple of months and I want to start using cloth nappies as soon as possible. DD1 has been in a mixture of flat terries and motherease one size since about 3 months but before that I found everything too big for her.

So, with DC2 I'm considering using muslins for the first few weeks as I don't want to spend a lot on new nappies that will only be used for a few weeks (not planning any more DC). Has anyone done this? Where can I get decent muslins? What sort of wraps would be best? Any other suggestions for good and cost-effective nappies for a newborn?Thank you!

Hello, I currently have a 1 week old in cloth and have cloth nappied from a similar age for my previous child. So far I think it depends on the baby- what size they are and whether they poo a lot!

DS2 pooed constantly so I was changing nappies before they were even damp a lot of the time. Muslins were perfect for him as I didn't need absorbency just containment IYSWIM. He was also a big baby so fitted the size one nappies quite quickly.

DD wees a lot but only poos about once a day. I haven't tried her with a muslin (partly because I've no nappy nippas at the moment) but I think she might get saturated very quickly. Although she is much smaller than DS2 (7lb8 at birth) a size 1 Totsbot isn't ridiculously large on her so you might find you're ok with the terries. I've also been given some newborn size Swaddlebees and Imse Vimses which are lovely but I don't see us getting much use out of them unfortunately.

As far as wraps go, my current favourite is a Thirsties wrap which is 0-9 months size. It's height adjustable so fits a very small baby and hopefully should last a while.

Hope some of this is helpful. It might be worth seeing if you can get a nappy voucher (if you didn't for DC1)- our council gives £54 which would get a few newborn nappies and wraps.

Thank you! I might get some muslins to have in and experiment with the terries if needed then. I'd been looking at the Thirsties wrap as I like the idea of using it a bit longer (think some of my wraps took quite a beating with DD - she's a skinny but long little thing so was in the medium ones for a loooong time!)

Have you got any terries worn thin? I have some very battered ones that will be perfect if I ever have another.

Unfortunately not - DD was far to wriggly and we changed nappies before she could wear them out!

I used Easy Peasy Bimbles for the tiny newborn stage, and was really happy with them. They're entirely fleece lined, so nice and dry against their bottom! They're pretty reasonable too, and they do bulk discounts. We used a Motherease wrap with them, and never had a leak (well, ok, just one, a turbo poo that propelled up her back!)

I used bumgenius which comes with newborn insert. So was comfortable for a newborn. And then they have a thicker insert for when they fit

I also used bumgenius and little lambs 3 part bamboo nappies without a booster at first so they were more comfortable for a new born. So more of a two part system

With All in one birth to potty nappies can be used shortly afterwards. However because they fit a toddlers they make smaller babies look like they have a Jlo bum

Totsbots teenyfits and little joeys were what we used from birth to about 12lb. They resell well (search CBM sales on fb, you may find some on there)
