Pre-potty training nappies for 19mo boy?

DS is 19mo and in cloth most of the time - having to resort to disposables when out and about though as he's holding on to his wee (mostly) and flooding the nappy - they are soaked through (even the outside of the nappy is wet) after 2 hours - and expecting him to submit to more frequent nappy changes just aint going to happen! Also they're looking a bit small on him - we use popper BTP pocket nappies (little lambs OSFM and ebay cheapies) with 2 boosters, one bamboo and one microfibre, he's on the loosest popper at the leg side of the nappy. He's only on 25th-50th centile for weight, but tall. Nappies are dry pailed, rinsed and drained, washed at 40 with a tiny bit of bio with an extra rinse at the end, so there shouldn't be build up.

What do I do? I'm loathe to switch totally to disposables as we've come this far, and want the benefits of cloth when it comes to potty training.

Any ideas please o wise MNers?

For our DS (24mo) the most reliable nappies are two parters. He's tall as well and does big wees in one go. We use Tots Bots stretchies (bamboo) with the standard poppered insert or MotherEase One Size (cotton) with a poppered insert (they don't come with the nappies as standard but all the MEOS have the studs that allow you to attach the insert). For both nappies we fold up the insert at the front so it's effectively 2 layers. These nappies will last us 4 hours at least. We use Motherease Airflow wraps or Blueberry Coveralls. Haven't had any leaks (unless you count ones where the cover wasn't put on correctly Hmm).

Also if you're keen on keep using the AIOs (they are more convenient when out and about for sure), maybe look into switching out the microfibre insert and using either another bamboo one, or alternatively hemp or charcoal are supposed to be super absorbent too.

I quite like Real Easies, they are sized AIO nappies with a microfibre core and a hemp (I think) insert that is attached. They have lots of room to boost even further. They're my nappy of choice for the change bag.

Hi mightilyoats (love your name! There seem to be a lot of Pratchett names on here at the moment?!) I've found Green Pomelo pocket nappies are longer than most I've seen - and I've recently started a nappy library so I've seen a lot! - and are good on my tall girl. I use a hemp booster from Easy Peasy nappies plus a bamboo or microfibre and find them really absorbent. Another option for boosting a pocket nappy is a prefold, if you hold it so the sewn in seams are horizontal, then fold each side in, one on top of the other so it's a third the width, they fit into most pocket nappies and are really absorbent. Y can usually get prefolds cheap second hand on eBay, or they're not that expensive new.

I might try those, thanks biscuitscrumbs - still using naty disposables at the moment, but don't like them! I have some prefolds so might try those, also thinking about digging the terry nappies out, if I can get DS to not wriggle long enough to get them secured!
