STAHM's how do you plan your days?

I'm just being nosy, I wonder if I get it right sometimes. My DD6 is at school and DD4 and DS3 at nursery three mornings per week. I don't spend the whole of the nursery time doing housework, just a quick tidy and some washing. Am wondering if I'm not being the best mother and should use this time to do house stuff so that all my time when the kids are at home I can spend totally on them, not house stuff. What do you do?

Planned days? dreams of days gone by when one was able to plan days

I am with you tho... when DS in having his midday nap(usually considerable... up to 4 hours) I like to get the majority of my housework done, prep a bit of dinner, cleans, tone , moisturise so I can spend time with him in the afternoon.... I always leave some washing up tho, in case of screaming ab-dabs.... easier to ignore when you're scrubbing the decks

Good grief no. Children need to see you doing the housework, otherwise they grow up thinking the fairies do it. In fact, they need to help you do it, too!

Nursery time is you time. Or at least the time when you do the stuff that is a nightmare to do with a 3-yr-old "helping".

The only semblance of a plan that I have, is that as soon as I get in from dropping dd off at school, I sit down and have a hot cup of tea.

GDG · 17/05/2006 19:57

Once I've dropped ds1 at school and ds2 at nursery, I go home with ds3 and it's about 9.30. I might spend an hour-ish doing dishes, washing, hoovering, tidying. He usually rides on the hoover! Then spend a bit of time reading with ds3. Then he naps from about 11-1pm and I usually work (I'm freelancer) and sort household things (bills etc). Pick up ds2 at 1pm, we might do shopping, go to park or just come home and play (I'll probably do more washing, preparing tea or something). Not long till we pick ds1 up from school then they all tend to play together while I make tea. Usually read ds1s reading book with him and then read with the other 2 aswell.

On mornings ds2 is not in nursery, we do soft play or meet up with friends.

Agree fruitful. Ds3 (19 months) helped me clean the windows (inside obviously!) and wardrobe mirrors today!!

Agree with fruitful. Any down time is you time. It's not as if your day's strictly 9-5.

Great stuff, you're all making me feel much better. When other Mum's drop off at nursery they give the impression that they're off to clean and cook. My DH tells me to sit on my backside and do nothing, which sometimes I do, but then of course feel guilty. Very good point about the children seeing you doing housework and actually they do 'help'.

watch phil and fern, sleep in the afternoon when dd naps, hand her over when dh gets in from work pop open the wine and come on MN Grin

Yes - nursery time is definitely 'you' time - put the telly on, make a coffee and grab a biscuit. Sod the housework - it's there to be done when the kids are around so you can say "go and watch CBeebies now, Mummy's very busy cooking tea in the kitchen/cleaning the bathroom" - buys you 5 minutes peace and hopefully you don't have to do too much housework then either! I do most of the cleaning/tidying up when my two have just gone to bed - spend about 20 mins putting the house back in order (kind of) and then slump for the evening in front of the telly/PC.

eidsvold · 18/05/2006 03:51

when my dd1 is at nursery/school I do the shopping and messages etc in town with jsut dd2 as well as some cleanign etc but I still have dd2(18 months old) to care for so that takes up my time.

Alipiggie · 18/05/2006 03:53

Pre-school time is my time, as well as for the odd errand. Hairdressers, or just sipping a Latte in the bookshop.

I'm with TheLadyVanishes - sounds like a perfect division of labour to me. Grin

Plan days?

Well I suppose I plan the mornings. I do a wash every day, and put it out to dry and put dry clothes away.
I get up when ds wakes me (between 7.30 and 8) I feed him and have breakfast. He then goes back to sleep hor an hour or two while I shower, get myself ready, sort washing, wash up bottle and clear breakfast stuff up, hoover etc. I then make his dinner and it cools whilst I get ds washed, dressed, clean nappy etc.
I then feed him and me again, clear up and then we have the afternoon to do whatever it is we want to do - play, or shop, or visit friends/family.
Before coming home to do the sterilising routine - you know put kettle on and steriliser, wait 45 mins, make bottles, stand in cold water, put in fridge (god can't wait until he's a year old and stop all this faffing). In the meantime, cooked ds and our dinner.

I tidy as I go along.

Ds does do the bedtime routine with ds so he can spend some time with him and give me a break.

I'm exhausted just writing it down!

Although tbh I was going to say I don't really do much and spend and awful lot of time on here, but I do do quite a bit I suppose. :o

ProfYaffle · 18/05/2006 09:42

Activity in the morning (as you can see, it's MNing this morning) sleep in the afternoon.

That's as far as I usually plan.

ChaCha · 18/05/2006 14:35

Panicpants - Firstly, what a great name!! :o Secondly, I had to LOL at bottles routine. Rings a big bell here.

I have just the one aged 24 weeks and have been enjoying a routine as of late. I do lots of housework moreso in the evenings so that I can get out early morning when I feel like it with ironed clothes ready to wear and not having to feel guilty about leaving a mess, cooking dinner and the all other mundanities. When it's all prepared in advance I feel super organised and does my stress levels the world of good :)

yumsymumsy · 18/05/2006 14:42

Well, I'm usually just so busy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Up at 6am to do my morning exercise to keep the flab away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (no offence to any fatties there!) Funny how it just seems to be them these days, and they go the opposite way to school but I expect that's just to pick up the others!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are soooooo considerate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smile I have the baby with me of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We spend all day then making cakes and lots of other goodies to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We start from scratch you know, nothing is bought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How clever are we!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then we have a light lunch and the baby goes to bed for a siesta (yes I do love Gina Ford!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) whilst I have my daily massage and pedicure (must keep in tip top condition for my lovely man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) The children come home and they play together whilst I change into something more appropriate for my man. Then we have a lovely scrummy delicious meal together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
