hi,
my 2 yr old dd was born here in the uk, and , though we are both germans (i am half canadian) and speak german at home, she understands and speaks english as well, due to the fact that we mainly meet up with englishspeaking mums and kids.
we have to return to germany in the summer and i am concerned that she will lose her english. i don't feel comfortable with starting to exclusively speak english with her, although i read alot of english books to her and sing english songs, etc. i find myself mixing the languages quite a bit, but was told this is not a good idea "one person one language" being the preferred option.
does anybody have any tips or experiences to share/
thanks!!

tapes, cds, dvds and, later, books... there's lots available on Amazon etc. Early learning Centre used to be a good place when my kids were very tiny.

Where are you heading? Tons of bilingual kindergartens here (Berlin). I'd go for that option, then onto one of the bilingual Europa schools, if there is one near you.

hi,
unfortunately, to a small town in bavaria, so international school/kindergarten not an option :(

Where we used to live in south Germany we went to an english group for mums with toddlers and there were quite a few german mums who had just returned from a few years in america so they joined to keep up the language.
Try to find british or american families near you and I am sure they will be pleased to make new friends and you can meet on a regular basis. Dvd's in english and cds wih all the english nursary rhymes are also good. A good place to meet is the supermarket, when people heard me speaking english to my kids tehy often spoke to me!

mimimimi (feel like I'm warming up to sing here Grin)... where in Bavaria? Will you be far from Munich? As far as I remember there is an internaitonal school there.

Otherwise just try and speak as much English to your dd as you can :) According to what I've read somewhere the language 'libraries' get built in a kids brain in the first year of life so even if she forgets her English now chances are she'll be picking it up quickly when she's having it at school again :)
