One of my friends has told me how her boys both stopped having bottles at about 10 months

My dd is nearly one and she still likes her bottles, i'm going to put her just onto cups/beakers in the day times soon but i think she will want her bedtime bottle for a bit longer

thurlow ds4 loved his milk and would have 9oz three/four times a day until almost 18mths. I gradually cut down the amount in the bottle so he was having 5oz twice a day. Just made an ounce less and did that for a few days/week or so and then reduced it by anothet ounce or so.

Also i found in the summer it was easier to cut down/stop milk ad they dont want it so much when its warm and you are naturally outsids and out and about more so they are distracted and dont miss it.

BUT my two DNs (both 2.5ish, DSIS and DSIL's DDs) have only recently stopped having a bottle of milk before bed - each child is different.

About 4 years for eldest, middle one still has a bottle of milk before bath time age 3, don't care what anyone else says, mine would never drink out of a beaker, it's only milk

That sounds familiar! We're now down to 5oz morning and night, and 4oz in the afternoon, so maybe that's not too bad. That's a good tip about the summer, I might stop worrying about it until it's warmer and try to drop the afternoon bottle then. It might coincide with more consistent naps - that would be useful!

5madthings · 18/04/2013 14:08

Well that's only 14oz a day and they need to have 12oz minimum once over a year, tho that can be made up with cheese and yog so sounds fine to me :)

And yes naps will change etc I the summer, you are out more and its warmer and lighter so they tend to sleep less... not such a good thing but you can get it a pattern of a nap after lunch etc.

My dd is at an age where she may drop her afternoon nap, some days she misses it. I know that come the summer holidays her nap will go as we will be busy, the older ones will be around and it will be warm etc. i coulkd cry thinking about it I need that break in the afternoons!

Oh, isn't dropping naps every parents worst nightmare?! Tbh, I'd rather she had one decent nap after lunch instead of two catnaps, but there you go.

She eats loads of cheese and yoghurt so is probably getting a shedload of milk, so I might try dropping the morning and bedtime to 4oz each soon. Thanks for the reassurance though!

Those of you with toddlers who still have a night milk bottle, how does your evening routine go?
Our (19mo) is tea, play, bath, clean teeth in bath, into PJs and gro-bags, snuggle with bottle (DS, DD would happily drop it altogether), bed.
Obviously that's milk after teeth cleaning. But I don't want to get them into their gro-bags in the dark, then out into the bathroom to clean their teeth and wake them up. Er... What does everyone else do?

5madthings · 18/04/2013 14:21

One big after lunch nap is best but 15mths? Is maybe a bit young for that depending on what time you all get up. Certainly by summer it will be doable tho.

My dd's nap has been getting shorter, it used to be a good two hours or longer but now its not much more than an hour and if we are out she doesn't nap at all :( they should have a daytime nap until start school IMO! Grin

Mine have their milk downstairs before going up to do teeth and put pj's on :)

Thurlow · 18/04/2013 14:34

April, at the moment we do bath, half the bottle, into PJ's, book/play for fifteen minutes, then upstairs and into growbag, a cuddle and the rest of the bottle with a little lamp on, then teeth cleaning, then in to bed awake. Though I was thinking the other day that I might change it soon and do bath, bottle, teeth, then a book upstairs in the grobag before bed.

MrsPennyapple · 18/04/2013 15:28

April We do milk downstairs too, then it's upstairs for bath, teeth, nightclothes on, story, cuddle, cot.

I turn her bedroom light off once she's in her nightclothes, and do the rest by the landing light as it gives plenty of light for me to read by, and then I push the door closed a bit more for cuddle time.
