Bad Mummy Moment

DS aged 5 and a half months comes into bed with me from around 5 or 6am, we play, have a cuddle and then he falls asleep until we both get up. This morning I was very, very tired after having come home late and fell asleep before he himself had done so too.
I had two large pillows by edge of bed as a 'just in case' but he managed to get those on the floor and I was woken was a thud and scream. Found DS lying on the floor where he'd fallen from the bed. Monitored him for a while, he's been fine, normal chirpy self but I'm still feeling very guilty and very angry with myself for letting this happen :(

Has anything similar happened to anyone else? I just feel like the worst mummy in the world at the moment. Thanks for listening.

These things happen all the time. I fell with ds in my arms (8months) and he landed in the road on his head (Yes did the night in a&e thing) but he's fine, and I felt sooooooo bad.

But I bet it will make you 100 times more careful in the future!

Ds did the same last week! I think it is almost a parenting rite of passage. I tormented myself (lots) and then a friend reminded me that they are very resilient! It's ok, it happens, and he's ok. Now he needs a happy mummy who is not beating herself up. Smile

err...my dd (second child so should know better!) fell out of her highchair head first onto stone flagged floor-because I didn't strap her in!-she was aged 9 months at the time!
Had to take her to casualty (although there wasn't a mark on her!) imagine how I felt explaining that one!
don't worry-these things happen.

DD1 has fallen out of bed a couple of times, i left her on the bed with 2 pillows each side of her and she managed to roll over them and land on the floor, she was fine, i felt bad too.
Your not the worst mummy, e has probobly forgoten about it already.

P45 · 14/05/2006 20:42

NO, you were not a bad mum, just a tired one. I bet it won´t happen again!

ChaCha · 14/05/2006 20:46

I will definitely be more careful from now on. With every new milestone you seem to need more pairs of hands and more eyes!
My mum said babies are resilient too, she said that with a voice of experience. Well, i guess I turned out okay.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I will take the bad mummy hat of and replace with 'these things happen be more careful' one.

Today ds was in shorts and when I was putting him in his car seat I caught his little chubby thigh in the car seat clip, I didn't realise until he started screaming. So dp had a screaming baby and a sobbing mummy to contend with in a town centre car park!

Felt terrible, but now I'm home I can see it was an accident.

WestCountryLass · 14/05/2006 21:31

has happened to both of mine. DS rolled pver the pillows and was wedged between bed and wall and DD rolled out (no pillows as was 18 months) and landed on the floorboards with a thud.

It happens, it is horrible but you can't beat yourself up about it (((hugs)))

kipper22 · 15/05/2006 09:34

At about same age as your DS, I left my DS in a bouncy chair on kitchen surface while I was cooking (Blush I know how stupid that was now!) He was just starting to roll & tried to roll out if seat, landing face first on the tiled floor. We ended up in a&e with, like chipkid said, not a mark on him. Certainly makes you so much more careful (until they take you by surprise performing their next trick such as suddenly crawling off the bed!)

Welcome to motherhood. It happens to us all (well mostly) Try not to worry yourself too much about it, you're not a bad mum, just a normal one.

DD was 8 weeks old and her pram blew upside down in a freak gale, we had just been to the clinic and had left her outside the shop and not strapped her in. She actually came out of the pram and into the hood!! Shock I was beside myself with worry and crying and everyone rushed out of the shop but were more worried about me than the baby. She was just upset that she had been disturbed from her sleep and was absolutely fine, I took her back into the clinic to get her checked over and by this time she was fast asleep, I of course was still a gibbering wreck!!!

The worries of being a mother, it happens to us all Smile
