dd is very diligent about wearing a high factor suncream and as the sun has come out this week and it has been hot hot hot these last few days , i have of course made sure that she is covered in high factor cream for school. just got a note home today say that teachers can't be responsible for children in the sun etc etc as there are too many kids and not enough time.
dd was made to feel crap for trying to put on her cream and a hat before games( it is 26 degrees today) and has come home with a big red face (sun exposure)after 2 hours on the hockey pitch.Aparently her ( male ) teacher told her not to be so vain.
I am beyond livid. this is doubly unspeakable as her father died from skin cancer.

definately not insaneand not hysterical harpie.

cremolafoam · 12/05/2006 16:20

thanks leahE. exactly what i have been trying to tell my mother for years. You would think that she of all people would get it since dd's dad died of it and has inherited his colouring.
You really need a think skin to have a pale skin these days.

I am really shocked by this teachers attitude, from your description of your dd's complexion surely he could see why she was doing it. I put cream on my boys religiously as my best friend's sister had skin cancer at 24. They always wear hats and UV suits when they are on the beach or swimming. It makes me sad that this attitude is not the norm Sad I wouold definitely speak to the head and also write to the governors, as this is a health issue. Is this teacher going to suggest that smoking is perfectly good for you too?

cod · 12/05/2006 16:22

do ou ythink there smore to the story than meets hte eye?
maybe she was pplying it in lesson
fiddlign aroudn with it when hse had made herself late for pe
kids ont awlays tell you the whole thing

cod · 12/05/2006 16:23

oha dn think those sunsuits lok crap so sorry

cod · 12/05/2006 16:24

oh and *DONT cc tot the LEA that will mreley put eh shools back up
you only need to cc tot he chair of governors int he first instance

the lea wont tkae it seriously till it has passed governor stage

shellybelly · 12/05/2006 16:25

my sister (same age) has overcooked in the sun and sunbeds and imo i've not told her this she looks 10yrs old than me, my mum coz she is the same (they both smoke so thats not helped their skin either but i used to smoke so i'm leaving that issue alone)

nailpolish · 12/05/2006 16:25

i would recommedn these once a day creams too

i put suncream on both dd's in the morning and they are fine all day

cod · 12/05/2006 16:26

yes me too

its not like she is out all day

beckybrastraps · 12/05/2006 16:26

I wouldn't go in all guns blazing until I had had a word with her teacher. I expect that if you explain your circumstances they will make every effort to help your dd.

beckybrastraps · 12/05/2006 16:27

In fact, they'll probably be mortified!

cod · 12/05/2006 16:28

oh god yes but then the mn reaction is aways rather over the top

shellybelly · 12/05/2006 16:30

I would go in with all guns blazing (sorry but thats just me) if in the note it does say TEACHERS can not be responsible then i think its come from someone higher than the teacher. I think if schools can teach children about safer sex at a younger age then surely they can teach them about keeping safe in the sun!

juliab · 12/05/2006 16:31

Cremolafoam, I would be beyond livid, too. And have been! My family are all very pale-skinned and burn easily and my mum has had several melonomas removed.
But my kids are often laughed at at school for wearing sun hats and suncream in the playground. They're used to it now but it did upset them for a long while.
Wanted you to know that a dermatologist we saw (about something else) last year went mad at me about my sons' freckles (sign of skin damage etc etc). When I told him about the school and the teachers not taking responsibility for sun protection, he said he thought there would be lots of cases brought for damages in the future by skin-cancer patients who'd been sunburnt as kids in school playgrounds. Worth mentioning that to your head teacher, perhaps?

LeahE · 12/05/2006 16:32

There might be more to the story than meets the eye but the fact that cremolafoam's dd came home bright red and burnt does rather suggest that she didn't have suncream on, and if she's normally diligent about applying it that suggests some interference somewhere. On reflection though agree with cod about governors before LEA (although as you're going for face-to-face meeting that's not relevant at the moment).

Sunsuits may look crap but sunburn looks worse imo. And you can't take off the sunburn when you go home.

cod · 12/05/2006 16:33

think all gusn blazing will achive nothing but get you knwon as a pita at s hcool

( i speak from experinece)

shellybelly · 12/05/2006 16:33

cremolafoam i think this is your calling to start the keep safe in the sun campaign for schools Grin

infact keep safe in the sun rings a bell?

Blandmum · 12/05/2006 16:33

The teacher should not have prevented the application, and shouldn't have mocked if that is the case.

Teachers don't have the time to put on 30 lots of sunscrean though (I know that isn't the case tis time IYSWIM).

beckybrastraps · 12/05/2006 16:34

Sorry, but all guns blazing as a first approach doesn't work.

spidermama · 12/05/2006 16:35

I would be careful to get the teacher's side of things before you go in angrily.

I say this because my dd came home with a chunk cut out of her hair saying a reception boy in the playground did it with scissors. Natually I went in and had a serious talk only to go home and find - guess what? - a chunk of hair under the dining room table. Blush Blush

Blandmum · 12/05/2006 16:36

Yup....sm....been there done that one too!

cod · 12/05/2006 16:36

spidey i remember that one

Blu · 12/05/2006 16:37

Cod - I agree that starting with the teacher - who if they have any snese will be mortified and sort things out - is better than going straight to the LEA. Butwhatever the usual mn conflagration, I think the particular history in Creamola's family would get a lot of people going, don't you?

Creamola, do the school know what happened to your DH?

shellybelly · 12/05/2006 16:38

when i say guns blazing i mean making sure that the issue isn't brushed under the table, i certainly wouldn't go in shouting the odds
