What do you do with nappies?

Pooey disposable nappies, that is.

We've been tootling along quite well with a tall and skinny pedal bin in DS's room, emptying it every 3 days or so, but now he's well established on solids the room is starting to, well, hum a bit. I know some people take dirty nappies straight to the outside bin, which is laudable, but I'm far too lazy to do that that isn't very practical for us.

What do you do?

I double triple bag with scented nappy bags for last thing/over night/ first thing poos then out to the main bin.

We live in a 2 brm apartment so all nappies in scented nappy sacks go in the kitchen bin, emptied every day or second day at the max.

DS is only 5 months though and just starting solids... Will I need a nappy bin or something else as the poos get worse??? Way too impractical to take poo nappies out downstairs to the bin room each time.

We have the Tommee Tippee Sangenic nappy bin, bought blindly because a few people said we had to get one for pfb and we knew no better...! But actually it's great. So long as you factor in cost of cartridges. Twists nappies up into a long sausage thing in the bin so locks away the smell, doesn't seem to let any out at all, you need to empty every 2-3 days. A 3 pack of cartridges lasts a few months. Sure lots will say it's not worth it but I much prefer not faffing around with nappy bags.

Bagged nappy goes in carrier bag hanging on kitchen cupboard door. Full bag gets emptied, usually every day.
Fine except when the sun shines straight onto the bag...

Diaper Genie. Not sure if they are available here, brought ours from the US. Only have to empty it every few days, no smell other than a few seconds after putting a dirty diaper in.

We bag all dirty nappies and they are popped just outside the back door. Daily, or every second day, we pick them up and move them to the wheelie bin. But DS only has 1 dirty nappy a day so it's not like there's a mountain.

Nappy wrapper bin in the nursery. Gets emptied as soon as it's full. Poos get flushes down the loo though unless they're the current delightful teething ones. They get double nappy sack wrapped and straight out to black bin!

We are lucky that we live in a developed country with a sophisticated sewage system. Why on earth would anyone choose to bury excrement, tightly wrapped in non biodegradable wrapping, in the very limited amount of land left available in this country!

I am really surprised anyone with an ounce of common sense actually needs to ask this question.

Flush poo down the loo, nappies all go straight to outside bin here.

Maybe you could organise a bit better, put key in door and unlock before going to change nappy, only close stairgate if you're going to be leaving baby able to reach stairs (unlikely while you're changing nappy), drop nappy just outside back door and move to bin once baby in bed?

Straight outside was what we did when dd1 and ds were small. Double bagged nappies will never degrade in a landfill.

Now they are picked up with DS's incontinence pads and incinerated. Maybe that could be a practical solution to landfill. During the week we have then in the downstairs toilet in a swing bin with a couple of air fresheners. The bin takes about 3 days to fill, when the two younger girls were in full time nappies it was 2 days. The yellow incinerator sacks then go straight into a black wheelie bin outside and the sacks are collected weekly just before the bin lorries turn out.

I'm sure somewhere there is something about it being illegal to put human poo in your wheelie bin. Not sure if that is right though so don't throw any pooey nappies buns at me.

Surely it depends on the consistency of the poo? Mine wouldn't just tip out if the nappy, mine as in my babies obviously!

You would have to scrap it etc do I just wrap nappy and reseal it with the tabs and put in a carrier bag and in the outside bin.

My cat shits in an open box, that also gets dealt with daily.

Fortunately DD is a once a day after breakfast girl now so we change most pooey nappies downstairs. Used to have a nappy bin upstairs for night time changes.

I agree with 5eggs. At 23 months most of DS's poos are pretty wet, so disposing of them down the toilet would involve more than just tipping.

As 5 eggs says its about consistency, if it was more solid I'd be more inclined. As it isn't I stand by my previous post about scraping out shit.
