Recommend me a nit treatment please

This is driving me slightly round the bend now.

DD2 has nits, she's not crawling with them, but there always seems to be a low level infestation - I seem to find a few most times I check her hair.

Our usual nit regime is to cover her hair in tea tree conditioner and go through her hair with a Nitty Gritty comb 2 or 3 times a week. She also uses the Vosene nit shampoo whenever she washes her hair in the shower

If I find them, I treat her with a nit lotion - I've tried Full Marks and Hedrin so far.

So, Sunday night I did the conditioner/Nitty Gritty thing. Found a couple of nits so treated her with Full Marks. Checked her carefully again after her shower. Nothing.

I get a call from school today to tell me she had nits again.

What am I doing wrong?

DD1 has never had them, I check and comb both girls frequently and treat DD2 when I find them so why can't I get rid of the things

Do you comb yourself and your dp?

freddiefrog · 20/03/2013 00:55

Yes, we do check ourselves. Not as often as the kids, but we do check

We've never found them on anyone but DD2

Olive oil on the hair dissolves their exoskeleton and vinegar dissolves the glue they stick the eggs with. Also essential oils in shampoo, rosemary/tea tree oil seem to deter them.

Other than that, have you checked all hats, scarves, beds, pillows, teddy bears, hair clips, scrunchies, dressing up wigs, dressing gowns and friend's heads? Basically the little buggers can survive on just about anything until they find a new host.

If you want to try the olive oil, slather it on and leave for about an hour before combing. It takes a lot of rinsing so more a job for the weekend. The vinegar is difficult to apply as it runs straight off, I soak the ends of the hair and work up the the roots with a thick towel on DD's shoulders. Again, leave for about 30 mins and comb through. My DD is allergic to all commercial nit shampoos so I've had the find natural ways, this really does work.

Good luck I'm itching now

The conditioner and nitty gritty is great for the wee nits, however it doesn't get the eggs, which stick to the hair, so you have to repeat every 2 days for about 2 weeks to be sure to eradicate all the little b***ds. Good luck

The Nitty Gritty should get the eggs, as well. It has those close set teeth with spirals.

I think you should do the comb every single say for at du a week, and launder all hats and scarves and bedding.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 20/03/2013 06:06

Oh and just to be safe, the whole family should also use the comb every day for a week.

Bit of insider knowledge here. The people who make Hedrin Once know that it is categorically the best de louser but keep quiet because if they shouted about it no one would use their other products. No pesticides either, just silicone.

I would say that you're just not getting rid of them - I would forget the treatments and just keep combing with the nitty gritty comb but do this every night. I ended up doing a wash, condition and comb every 3 nights but a dry comb every night (for about an hour per child in front of the telly - very, very carefully) It worked and I also carried on until I'd had 3 completely clear nights in a row.
