HELP! i've spent last half hour on internet researching real nappies for a relative. It's 10 years since I used them, and I can't remember what kind I had now, flat ones I think. Anyway, I thought I'd decided what looked good, from kittykins.co.uk, but then i did another search & now i'm not sure , got lost again! There's too much choice!! I want to get a full kit. The baby is coming up to 1 year, with a SAHM mother who doesn't care about the environment but is interested in saving money! Please can anyone advise me?!

If she doesn't care about the environment, then you're going to want to go for something super easy, that won't leak. I would suggest a shaped nappy would fall into this category (so not prefolds like Bambino Mio or terry squares).

What washing / drying facilities does she have?

I think if she wants to save money, then she should look at prefolds as they are more economical. Eg Bambino mio. Or look on ebay as there are loads going second hand or new as some nappy suppliers advertise on there.

My reasoning for advising against prefolds, is that in my experience they often leak. They are possibly better with a one year old with solid poo though (DS has food intolerances, so several runny poos each day Shock). I just think that if you are only using them for cost saving measures, and they keep leaking, then you'd probably end up not bothering. Whereas if you had a really reliable system (like Tots Bots and a Motherease wrap) that didn't leak, you'd probably get on better with them. They are more expensive in the first place, but they have a resale value, and Tots can be obtained second hand quite cheaply at the moment.

nappy lady has a classifieds section where you can buy 2ndhand. All my ds's nappies were 2nd hand, saved a bundle and in my expereince the sellers are pretty honest about the condition.
Check out the nappies new 1st to make sure you get a good deal and remember postage costs!
Can also fill in questionnaire and get a personalised suggestion of what type to use...very useful and doesn't result in constant hounding to buy from them.
Not actually a salesperson for them, honest!

thanks for recommending nappylady - they replied v promptly to my email, didnt try & push their stuff, in fact told me they thought it'd be better to get the mum to contact them directly. very impressed.
