Poo doesn't stay in nappy!!!!!!

Every day, when my 1 year old DS has a poo, it leaks through the side, or up the back of his nappy. He is wearing size 4+ pampers actifit. when he has a more solid kind of poo, its fine and it stays in but when its a slightly less thick consistency it just leaks and goes through his clothes. I have to shower him off in the bath and scrub the carpet, every day at the moment! I absolutely dread it everytime he has a poo. I feel like i am constantly stressing about it and watching out every moment so i can change him asap, before it goes everywhere. Its so exhausting!!!! why won't his poo just stay in. Does this happen to anyone else? Even, if i have just put him in a fresh nappy, it still leaks. Any advice on what to do? Should i try different nappies?

Hi, I would say definitely experiment with different brands.
Dd1 was a Huggies baby and dd2 was a pampers.
Friends would always say oh god Huggies leak or oh god pampers leak- respectively, but I definitely concluded that different brands fit different babies.

Good luck, showering off poo is no fun!

Might be worth going up a size but also check you're unfolding the nappy properly so that the elasticated bits are round his legs and not still folded up ....if that makes sense!

Agree with above. Personally I found nature babycare to be fab, if a bit pricey. But def try different brands. Or try the nighttime pampers (baby dry I think) which are much more absorbent.

Is there something in his diet that is causing the loose poo perhaps? An intolerance to dairy or something? Does he have sweeteners in juice? at 1 I'd expect poo's to be solid unless ill. Are the nappies too big?

I really sympathise, my DS used to be just the same. I cried more than once trying to clean up his high chair and it used to get me really down! I'd agree with the try lots of brands approach and leg flaps folded out, and also really restricting anything that leads to looser poo in susceptible children (eg sweetcorn, raisins, citrus and soft fruit, fruit puree, fruit juice etc). I used to keep an eye on his nappy in general and try to change a wet one promptly, as poo on top of wet always led to extra leakage! There didn't seem to be anything wrong with him, just a big appetite and general 'toddler tummy', and he's grown out of it to some degree (tho still sensitive to too much of the above foods).

This might sound a bit mad. But have you tried sitting him on the potty. I put dd on as soon as she could sit up and she started right away to use it for poos. I put her on at nappy changes only whilst I got her fresh nappy out etc. Then I soon noticed she had a routine (after lunch) and so I just would do her change then. I rarely dealt with a pooey bum from then until she was out of nappies at just under two. Just another idea. My sympathies in any case. I have a young baby who is doing full body poos almost daily.

Sounds like you need to go up a nappy size.

babySophieRose · 14/03/2013 22:28

You may actually need to go down a nappy size. It happens to my DD, we went from size 4+ to size 4 and they fit her better, less leaky Nappies. Also giving less fruit pure, juce and only formula milk helped.

We had the same thing with active fit. Dd is a chubby 14mo and she's still in size 4 normal pampers.....

LittleEdie · 15/03/2013 02:03

Yes, I'd agree about not restricting diet at this age, just try different sizes and brands.

CoteDAzur · 15/03/2013 10:08

Going down a nappy size will make sure that poo rides up even higher on your baby's back.

gtedder1 · 16/03/2013 08:27

thanks everyone for your advice!! Smile . size 4 is too small for him and when i tried size 5 a while back, they were too big but maybe its time to move up now. I find baby dry pampers more absorbent but only use those ones at night. Will try them during the day to see if they hold in poo better! Diet wise, he does have juice regularly, so could try and cut it down.

Oh god my DS1 was like this! Luckily DS2 had much chubbier thighs which helps.

With DS1 I actually found that washable nappies were the only way to fully contain poos. But some brands definitely worked better than others. I did occasionally put a washable nappy wrap over the top of a disposable (after one very memorable train journey when he pooed all over my legs...)

A cheap flannel / couple of rags in your change bag is a good idea for those moments when you look at a baby wipe and think "this just is NOT up to the job!"

gtedder1 · 17/03/2013 23:08

thanks Grumpla . Smile I might just try the washable nappy wraps and and see how it goes.
