Please, any advice for my 11wk old ds who hasn't done a poo since Sunday and is getting grumpier and not sleeping...? We've tried water from a bottle, massage, jiggling etc. He's not too distressed but is grizzly. Thank you.

Put a dash of fresh orange juice in the water which always helped

If bf fill yourself with fibre rich foods and drink lots of water. If ff cooled boiled water between feeds.

Dash of fresh orange juice as advised above works brilliantly! I mix it with small amount if cooled boiled water - are you able to give a bottle if course.

What's his usual pattern for them? Even in FF babies up to two-three days between poos can be normal (and they do change frequency at various points, just to be extra confusing).

Having looked at a paediatric dietician's book on feeding I have (Feed Your Child Well) they make the following comments (and I have paraphrased):

  1. While constipation can result in less frequent movements it is the consistency or hardness of the stool that is the most important factor in determining constipation
  2. Any change in feeding regime (switch from BF -> FF, change of formula can result in changes in frequency and consistency of the stool (so you may not yet be at actual 'constipation stage)

If definitely constipation then:
For babies of 8 weeks to 6 months: Offer 30-60mls cooled boiled water once or twice a day between feeds. If this doesn't help then: Prepare 60mls diluted apple or pear juice using 45mls cooled boiled water to 15mls juice
Apparently juices offered to babies should be unsweetened and unpasteurised. The dilute mentioned above is specifically for constipation, and not for 'normal' drinks.

Sorry for essay, but hope it helps!
