Do you get up with your 5yr olds

Basically just that. Ds has always been an early riser and well I'm sick of getting up with him at 6am to a cold house when I'm shattered and pregnant.

He is 5. Is there anything wrong with telling him just get on with it instead of waking me or his dad up every weekend morning Sad

Ask dad to get up

We did used to let ds play in his room alone while we dozed if he woke early but I do think its a bit mean and I could never relax properly with him up alone.

Get dad to get up with him.

ChablisLover · 09/03/2013 07:11

I would get up

Ds is 6 and I still get up

Only cos I know what havoc could be caused and if im up it can be kept an eye on.

I know it's different for you being pregnant but then I would ask if dh would get up with him

When new baby comes along it will all change anyway

MimsyBorogroves · 09/03/2013 07:18

Mine reads comics in bed if he is up earlier than me.

Yes would get up and still get up with my 7yo - hate the idea of her downstairs on her own - tend to go down, put the tv on and snooze on the sofa if its very early. Can you and dh not take it in turns for a lie in? X

MegBusset · 09/03/2013 07:43

Mine is not allowed out of his room til 8am on weekends! He has a stash of comics and books in his room and can read quietly if he wakes earlier. We also have a TV in our room so they can come in our bed and watch CBBC while we doze.

PrettyPirate · 09/03/2013 07:52

I get up with kids on Saturday mornings and DH on Sundays, it's always been like that. We like our sleep and that's fairGrin.
Mind you, if my 6 year old DD is up first, she just puts tv on and helps herself and 3 year old DS to breakfast, so we get extra hour or so. If DS is up first, then he's bouncing on our bed wanting to go downstairs with one of us. He doesn't like being on his own..

Patrickroy · 09/03/2013 08:10

No, ds is 4.3 and I have never got up with him. Before the age of 3 when he was wet at night and in nappies,, he had a gate on his door that we didnmt open until we got up and he'd play in his room. Now he'll go downstairs and play. He knows not to wake us up and I trust him not to be silly.

Rosa · 09/03/2013 08:14

At 4.3 ....wow.. We have a small flat so they get up and we can hear them easily. have never done alternate lie ins if dh has worked late then I get up and shut the door. Then stay with the dds.

Flojobunny · 09/03/2013 08:23

You have a DH, one of you should get up Shock I'm on my own so I always have to be the one to get up, even when pregnant with DC2.

Flojobunny · 09/03/2013 08:25

Also if you post this at 7am then you are going to get all the parents that do get up! You should have left this til half 10 then you'd get a more balanced argument Grin

SizzleSazz · 09/03/2013 08:27

No. Dd's are 6 and 4

6yr old is watching a DVD and 4yr old drawing in her room. I an in bed mnetting and dh snoring.

Dd's both dressed and will help themselves to milk/fruit until we get up for breakfast.

SizzleSazz · 09/03/2013 08:27

Lol flojo, I'm awake, not up!

ilovepowerhoop · 09/03/2013 08:30

my two arent allowed to come through to us until 7am - 'trained' them to that time from around the age of 3. DS (6) normally through at 7am on the dot. He was through at 7am today but asked to go downstairs and play the Wii so we let him. Me and dh went downstairs about 40 minutes later. Still waiting on dd (9) to wake up!

ScottyDoc · 09/03/2013 08:36

Are you crazy OP? Grin go and get back into bed with bump and snuggle! I have never got up with ds and have always made him a lovely big breakfast and put a film on before going back to bed. He loves to just draw and play with his cars until I get up about an hour/half hour later. He gets into bed with me occasionally too which is nice. I found it a godsend to get back into bed when preg with severe nausea, it's very very important to rest while you can.

No dd is 4.5 and has got up on her own for over a year. She's very trustworthy, just puts the tv on or plays, and knows not to wake me up or make a mess. I'm very lucky with her!
I suppose it depends on the child, if you've got one that will empty cereal everywhere, eat 6 bars of chocolate for breakfast or generally wreak havoc because they know you're asleep then you'd probably have to get up!

3isthemagicnumber · 09/03/2013 08:48

Yes .5.5yr old and always get up with him .
Am quite upset by the thought of young children being kept in wet nappies behind gates or on their own just so their parents can indulge themselves.
Each to there own I suppose but that's not for me

I would probably let my older two (nearly 5 and 3) get up on their own if I wasn't up with the baby anyway.

I can't see how it's any different to letting them play in their room while I'm downstairs.

forevergreek · 10/03/2013 19:02

I wouldnt want to be getting up. But get them to stay in room until a better time. (8am maybe).

IrnBruTheNoo · 10/03/2013 19:23

I am up with my two DC at 7am every single morning. I would not trust my 5yo to go downstairs and play on his own. I don't mind if he does this in his room but not downstairs. Would not forgive myself if anything happened to him.

My 2yo wakes at 6am every morning but I go in, switch his light on, leave him some books and toys in his cot and say 'mummy's going back to bed for 10 mins' and he's okay with this. He gets grizzly at around 7am so I get up out of bed and take them down to change 2yo's nappy and feed them breakfast between 7.15 and 7.30am. DM is shocked that I get up so early! What else can you do though?? I have to get up with them, cannot leave them to play just because I can't be arsed getting up every morning at a time that doesn't suit me. What kind of message does that send.

LibertineLover · 10/03/2013 19:30

My 5 yr old DS gets up with his Dad at 6 every day, he makes him some toast and a drink, puts telly on, and goes to work. I get up with DD about 7, he's perfectly happy and trustworthy to be there on the sofa for an hour on his own.

5madthings · 10/03/2013 19:30

Mine aren't allowed up before 7am. At the weekends they of tern get up and get bfast etc with dp and I still in bed.

I would tell a 5yr old to play quietly in their room or leave a snack and drink out so they can get up, have that and watch TV quietly :)

VictorTango · 10/03/2013 19:32

I'm a lone parent and I agree with everything you say IrnBru.

My 5yo is allowed to play upstairs but not to go downstairs. I couldn't sleep if she was downstairs by herself anyway with access to the cooker or windows that she can open for example.

When my 2yo wakes up I get up.

It's exhausting never having a lay in past 7 but what else could I do?
