Preparing your DCs for sharing a room

DS1 is 2.2 and DS2 is 3 months. At the moment DS2 is in the Moses basket in our bedroom, but the plan is to put him in a cot in DS1's room when he outgrows the basket (and is hopefully sleeping through the night!). DS1 has dealt with the arrival of his brother pretty well up until now, but I'm worried that having to share his room with him might be a bridge too far. We live in a 2-bedroom flat, so we haven't got any other choice.

I bought the cot the other day and was thinking of putting it up in DS1's room this weekend so he can get used to the idea, but I'm not sure if that's a good plan or not.

Any advice?

Yes why not put the cot in? Just act as if it's perfectly normal - don't display any hesitation. He'll flake his cue from you.

*take not flake!

I moved mine in at the same age. Tbh it never crossed my mind that DC1 would have a concept of his own room, though he may not have been as intelligent as your DS! I just said isn't it great, X is allowed to sleep next to you tonight. And then I never moved him out again :)

2 yr olds are normally far more possessive about people than things like having their own room. Just put the cot in and don't make a big deal about it. When you are 2 everything is "mine" he probably doesn't see it as his room anymore than the living room is his room. Just do it.
