apparently it helps with colic, but does it really work?

No idea - but surely colic is over by the time they are meant to be allowed to have teas?

foundintranslation · 03/05/2006 22:59

The Germans swear by fennel tea. I've never tried it, but it's so popular over here that there must be at least a placebo effect.

foundintranslation · 03/05/2006 23:01

Argh, that'll be a perceived placebo effect (in the eyes of the parents).

Interested in this thread?

Yes, the Germans love it.

Some even make the formula with fennel tea instead of just water, to get the anti-colic effect.

If you're breastfeeding I certainly wouldn't bother.

foundintranslation · 03/05/2006 23:02

Formula with fennel tea em? You're kidding.

emkana · 03/05/2006 23:03

No I'm quite serious.

I told you the Germans are weird. Grin

Tetly or twinnings mmh!. Reminds me of my Butlins days when babysitting and the mums gave you weak milky tea to give them for their bedtime bottle Shock.

peaches27 · 03/05/2006 23:11

I would like to try this. Do you give them weak herbal tea? From what age? Chamomile might help them kip better!

When my daughter was little Milupa did a herbal drink with fennel for babies and she loved it. I will be watching this thread as I am a big herbal tea drinker myself. Im also thinking of using some chamomile tea to make wipes (when I get time - number 35,638 on list of things to do).

MummyToToby · 03/05/2006 23:27

you can give weak chamomile tea made with cooled boiled water or you can try \link{http://www.mumstheword.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductID=194&C1=33&C2=6&C3=0\this}

My partner is Greek and his mother swears by an infusion called Luganiso (sp?) Its aniseed leaves boiled in water and strained.... apparently will relieve anything to do with tummy-aches and pains.

should be able to get it in any Greek food shop.

pablopatito · 04/05/2006 10:56

They're is nothing weird about the health benefits of herbal tea. Mankind has been brewing up for centuries.

zippitippitoes · 04/05/2006 10:58

yes i used to swear by milupa fennel..don't they do it now?

also chamomolie teething granules

Amiable · 04/05/2006 11:10

I must admit to making up formula with fennel tea instead of plain water. Blush

My dp is German, and MIL sent some over when dd was born. I was really sceptical at first - We tried plain fennel tea and dd really didn't take to the flavour. However, when we mix it with the formula she drinks it quite happily. She normally has a couple of her bottles a day made up with the tea. Can't say if it is the tea or not, but she is a very placid baby, and does not really suffer from bad wind/colic (she's now 10 weeks)

I figure even if it's not really having any effect, it's not doing her any harm so I'm quite happy to carry on.

peaches27 · 04/05/2006 14:36

zippi - I havent seen the Milupa stuff for ages. As I said I got it for daughter and she is 20 now!, but you dont see Milupa baby foods either. Ive been looking for them for our little one.

When I was in France you could get herbal tea in granules, I think it had sugar in it though. Might have to look in the health food shop.

The link from mummytotoby is for loose leaf tea which I find very messy. Give me bags any day!

I need to do some research on this!

DebsCee · 04/05/2006 23:47

You can buy baby fennel teabags which are made by Hipp Organic. My DS, now 22 months, has been drinking it since 6 months old and loves the stuff. I buy it from the supermarket or Boots so I assume it's readily available.

babyonboard · 05/05/2006 14:08

fenneltea is fine forbabies surely!

but jesus..reading this post reminded my of my friends sister who made formula with half a rusk and a tetleys tea bag in it from 6 months 'to send them to sleep'

this was only 3 years ago! eek!

LIZS · 05/05/2006 14:15

I used it with dd and it seemd to help. Had a tub of M_a granules but not sure if as readily available in UK. Also great when they ahve a tummy bug and can't hold much down.

zippitippitoes · 05/05/2006 14:23

make myself popular and link to milupa products lol \link{http://www.westons.com/milupa.html\ you can get the teas and the foods here there are loads of them!}

NotQuiteCockney · 05/05/2006 14:40

I give my kids herbal tea, but not in formula, and not before they're on solids. But DS1 (4.5) is quite fond of a cup of tea. I just use normal herbal tea, you know, the kind made from sticks and berries, not the kind made from actual tea.

I have no idea why anyone would buy "baby" tea, but then I wouldn't give anything like that to anyone under 6 months, and from over 6 months, I give my kids whatever (caffeine-free, alcohol-free) stuff I'm eating and drinking.

serenity · 05/05/2006 15:17

Xaveilli - I used to get that made for DC's too. MIL swears by aniseed tea for everything, unfortunately they agreed with me that it tastes vile Grin

can't see a problem with giving babies weak herbal teas tbh. They're caffeine free and surely that's the main gripe with 'normal' tea?

secur · 05/05/2006 15:21

we were given some fennel for dd3 but she didn't like it so we swapped for cammomile - great before bath before last milk IYSWIM, nice calm baby - I must admit, I drank the fennal tea myself - yuummy!

Amiable · 05/05/2006 18:52

bob - just to reassure you, I don't do anything like that!! DD has formula, water or the fennel tea formula mix only!!

peaches27 · 05/05/2006 22:34

I have given my DGD (5 months plus) tonight some very weak camomile tea. I made myself a cup of camomile tea, didnt leave it to brew but straight away poured an ounce into a bottle. I diluted this weak tea with another 5 ounces of water, and to my surprise, she liked it and drank it down. I gave it because she has been fretful all day I think its teething but Im not sure. You know when they have one of those days when the only symptom is fretfulness and bringing a bit more of their feed back? Anyway after the camomile tea she wasnt particularly sleepy, but she kept the next feed (2hrs later) down. So she can have it again.

Anyway, I tried the Milupa link, but if you click on anything in the list it doesnt do anything except take you to another unrelated page. Or is that just me?

peaches27 · 05/05/2006 22:37

PS I do remember giving my daughter a drink of weak milky tea,(real tea), because at the time she wasnt keen on juice or water, but she must have been about a year old. This was on the HV suggestion!
