Washable wipes - what do you do when you're out?

I am a recent convert to re-usable nappies and wipes (DD smells so much nicer :)) but need advice on what to do when we'e out, when we're using throw-away wipes.

We usually use 'eco' sort of throwaways when out too, but you can either take dry reusables and run them under the tap (if in a loo or baby changing place), or take a few wetted ones in a bag. Those zip bags you often get in a baby changing bag are quite good for the purpose.

we take a plastic takeaway tub with about a dozen dry wipes in it, and a little plastic tub of water (one of the tubs with a really good seal on the lid). teeny bit bulky, but doesn't really bother us.

I used to do the whole organised bit with pre-prepared wipes in a box with camomile tea and lavender etc but now I just take dry wipes in the nappy bag and run them under the tap

or \link{http://www.clothmadmummy.wahmall.co.uk/traderplus\this lady's} pad purses are nice for this if you're still at the camomile and lavender stage, they can go in the washer too

hate throwaways, they just move the poo about [disgust emoticon]

we use little bits of flannel or fleece, damp them with water wherever they are. and then put them in with the dirty nappy to be washed.

mcmudda · 03/05/2006 13:31

I use a washable waterproof bag (I got mine from Kittykins - made by nature babies) and take washable wipes. I take a few soaked in water just in case there's no sink in the babychange area. I used a resealable freezer bag before that which was fine too.

I found I automatically bung the wipes on top of the dirty nappy when I'm changing dd. With washable wipes I don't have to pick through a dirty nappy to retrieve them before washing (or they ended up fluffing up my washing machine).

I got some wipes from Ella's House and some from Nappies by Minki.

Or Perfectly Happy People do flushable baby wipes - but they remind me of the scratchy paper toilet roll from school -ouch!

Feel a bit Blush that I couldn't work that one out by myself - take washable wipes along and put water on them Blush.

And we have plenty of little bags they can go in.

Thank you everyone :)

I use washable wipes and take a little spray bottle from Boots/Superdrug with some of my wash lotion in. That way it doesn't matter where I am changing dd's nappy - even if there is no tap. The wipes and wash come in handy for wiping faces, bums, highchairs - just about anything really!

neena28 · 06/05/2006 20:30

Sorry to hijack...what do you make a wash lotion out of? Use cloth nappies (tots bots) but hadn't heard of the washable wipes. Must have had my head in the sand!!

Yorkiegirl · 06/05/2006 20:32

Ive got some wipes from stuffienappies. They come in their own little waterproof pouch so I wet them and put them in there before going out.

eidsvold · 07/05/2006 12:41

neena - i use - 2cups boiling water/1tsp olive oil/2tbsp baby wash ( whatever you ise ti wash baby in) mix it together in pampers or huggies box/tupperware container - throw in cloths - ready to go.

or when I haven't made the mix up adn I need wipes straight away - run them under warm water.

out and about - dry wipes run under water or wipes just damp in a zip loc bag.

Miaou · 07/05/2006 12:44

neena, I got some washcloths from Ikea (well actually Yorkiegirl very kindly got them for me Grin) which I cut into quarters and hemmed on the sewing machine. They are fab - just go in the wash with the nappies - and they are great for wiping faces after meals too.

Thanks for the lotion recipe - have been using ordinary wipes when out and about Blush

JennyWren · 07/05/2006 13:32

I just use water with a dash of the bath emollient dd has for her excema and a drop of lavendar oil as a wash. I make up a bottle full at a time and decant it into my spray bottles as needed.

Pruni · 07/05/2006 13:55

little green earthlets do flushable eco-wipes - not too bad, we use them occasionally (2.25 for 40, though)

neena28 · 07/05/2006 17:36

thanks for the wash lotion tips!

CorrieDale · 07/05/2006 18:27

JennyWren, that is just a brilliant idea with the bottle. Am inspired. Have been reluctantly using disposable wipes but am going to get some more reusables now...

misdee · 07/05/2006 18:32

i use ikea flannels. i just wet some and bung them in a waterproof bag or take them dry if i am going to someone house/hospital and wet them there.

Rach69 · 07/05/2006 20:20

Great recipe - must try that one. I have just been using a bit of baby lotion on a microfibre cloth. I have bought loads of these (Tesco value 3 for 89p) and use them to boost nappies as well as impromptu breast pads. I think htey are great as they have a less rough texture than terry and dry really quickly. I just pop them in with the dirty nappies.

Rach69 · 07/05/2006 20:23

Also, if dp uses wet wipes he uses about 10 whereas with a cloth he just uses one and folds it up. I hate giving money to Pampers! I also hate to see sanitary towels/tampax etc washed up the beach (I often walk our dog near a sewage outlet and you wouldn't believe what people flush away). I'm seriously considering washable versions now I am into cloth nappies.

LittleB · 08/05/2006 12:25

I just use a bit of baby lotion on dd's wipes. I made my own wipes out of fleece cut up into squares, you don't need to hem fleece!
