Birthday present for 1 year old

We are going to the first of many birthday parties for little ones who are turning one this year. I have a budget of £5 for a present and feel really mean, but really can't afford much more. I know if someone didn't spend too much on my LO's present I wouldn't think anything of it at all, but I also know not everyone thinks the same. I'd hate to offend, especially when the party is an 'organised' one and the parents will therefore be paying for my LO to attend. Can I decent present be bought for £5? If so, what?! TIA

That's the same budget I used recently - I bought a nice board book with textured pictures as our son loves those. I included the receipt too in an envelope in case they already day it. I don't think you can go wrong with:
books
bubbles
finger paints

Course you can. Boy or girl?
I would get maybe:

A book
A cup from the Disney shop
A DVD of pingu or similar
A ball
A small pack of life like animals/bugs
A musical instrument
Bath toys
A voucher
Jigsaw
Building blocks
A little something of whatever the baby's into at the time, like iggle piggle, octonauts etc

My DS (now 19 months) still loves those eggs!

Also lift the flap books were and still are popular - the Julia Donaldson ones are nice - Postman Bear/Fox's Socks...

Sometimes the Happyland car or people sets are 2 for £10 and they were very popular with him at his first birthday!

Thank you all so much, great ideas

If you go for a book, I would suggest writing a 'happy birthday' message in the inside cover - I still have a book my parents friend got me for my 1st birthday, and think it makes it just a little bit more special in years to come.
