Hello. My ds is nearly 22 months and Im due number two at the end of July. Ds is in a cot which he loves but we have a bed for him aswell. People have said to move him into the bed now so he doesnt feel pushed out of cot by baby when it needs it.
However I feel reluctant because he sleeps so well and if he wakes early he'll happily play in his cot for an extra hour until we get up, same goes for daytime naps. If I move him to a bed this will stop.
Dp and I are now thinking about buying a cotbed for when baby is out of the crib because ds bed will last him for a good few years so this baby will need a bed at some point so by buying a cotbed ds can stay in his cot until he is older and baby will have its own cot plus a bed when ready.
Do you think this makes sense or should we just move ds now???

well if baby isn't due until july and then will be too small for a big cot for first 3 months or so..i would maybe just leave him in his cot for the mo. then swap over in november(?)
make a big thing of it being a big boy bed.
baby will then be in cot for 2years or so by which time ds will be 4(?) and so need a proper bed?

Ds was in a cot from the off, not sure what "too small" means apart from him looking leedle, weeny tiny at one end of the cot!

If DS is sleeping well at the mo i would leave it. Pressume the baby will be in with you for the forst 6 months in a crib/moses basket in which case the vot wont be needed straight away anyway.

just emant more lilely to be in a crib or moses basket at that size.i always felt the big cot gave them too much space-they liked the cosiness of a crib.

beansprout · 02/05/2006 16:49

Fair enough. We couldn't afford to do both but ISWYM.

alexsmum · 02/05/2006 16:56

we used the carry cot off the pram for both boys.

Thank you for your replys. My ds was 2ft long at birth and this one seems to be following suite so the crib only lasted us for 4 months, but even that will give us a bit more time and then if ds isnt ready to move to his bed we can buy a cotbed for baby.
Im absolutely useless at making decisions!

When moving to a bed you can always put a stair gate across his doorway - to encourage him to play in his room for a bit upon waking, as he currently does in his cot.

Auntymandy · 02/05/2006 17:05

will you not use a crib or a moses basket first?
Ther is 31 months between mine and they stayed in the cot when baby was born then we made a big fuss of giving the cot to baby and going in a big bed!

malachismum · 02/05/2006 17:45

Yep this baby will be in a crib for the first 4/5 months depending on how long lo is! Ds was 2ft at birth so the crib didnt last him as long as we would have liked.
I think Ill keep ds in the cot and when this baby is ready to move into a cot we'll see if ds is ready for his bed and if not we'll buy a cotbed for baby!
We dont have many expenses this time as we have everything so I dont mind buying a cotbed.

Your Ds will probably sleep just as well in a bed as he does in the cot. Personally though I would leave him be as some children take a few steps backwards progress-wise when a sibling is born. Just saying this to eliminate the jealousy aspect... "baby is in my cot... I want it back" kinda thing might happen.

I had just this scenario at around the same age, I tried to move dd into the bed before the baby arrived, but she didn't like it so she had a rather cramped bedroom, with both bed and cot. We used the bed for reading stories. One day, when the baby was about 12 weeks DD asked to sleep in the bed and stayed there from then on. A few weeks later we encouraged her to give the cot to the baby - she thought it was her idea. It all worked perfectly in the end and we didn't have to buy another cot... until that is I got pregnant when the new baby was only 14 weeks old, but that's another story.

Glassofwine, thats really reassuring thank you. Ive decided to leave ds as he is and when the baby needs a cot we'll take it from there.
Ladies you've been so helpful, thank you.
