Help needed in getting my 6 month old to drink from a cup

I have tried a free flow, no spill, even just the cup. Handles, no handles but nothing seems to work. He either chews the nozzle as he hasnt figured out how to suck it or he ends up drenched!!

It's early, my son is only just getting it at 6 months, but IIRC my daughter was almost 1 before she properly held the cup by herself. It's one of those things that just takes time for them to learn, I guess.

6mths! Heavens seems a bit quick? But if u are determined try a doidy cup. It's light and tilted so they can see in it.

Dd dint start on a cup til 10mths and couldn't do it alone til after 1. Just curious, but why so important right this minute? Ages of time to learn this one?

Just persevere, mix fed DD drank all her formula feeds from an 'anyway up cup' from 6 months, but my three DS's took longer, youngest is 10 months and only just getting it.

I used to give DD a sippy cup filled with lukewarm water to practice drinking with in the bath. It didn't matter if she spilled it and it helped her get the hang of learning how far to tilt the cup.

She does now have a habit of drinking her bath water out of the flannel however.

Why do you want to? He's a tiny baby!

seeker · 25/02/2013 15:01

Generally speaking at this age with most things it's can't not won't. And if you wait a while, the problem miraculously disappears.

From about 7 months, I used a plastic shot glass for ds1 Grin. Perfect size for little mouth and tough plastic not the disposable flimsy ones. Got them from amazon, naturally! Lasted until he was 2. I held it for him in the beginning and he gradually took over. Will be doing the same for ds2.

HV? Ugh. They are obsessed about the oddest things! Do what you feel best then.

Had half wondered if had illness or something. Glad not. Good luck then.

Have I missed something or is there something wrong with giving a 6 month old a cup? Confused I thought the sooner they stopped having a bottle the better.

chocolatetester1 · 25/02/2013 16:50

You have to weigh it up. Whether your dc needs fluids or drinking practice more. Different for each child and different at different ages etc etc

seeker · 25/02/2013 16:52

Nothing wrong with giving a 6 month old a cup. All new experiences are good.

A lot wrong with being told that a 6 month old must drink from a cup and worrying about it.

notnagging · 25/02/2013 17:22

6 months is too early. Most cups A&E designed for 9+

notnagging · 25/02/2013 17:24

Are not A&E!Hmm

SquidgersMummy · 25/02/2013 17:28

Doidy cup works well with my dd - 29 wks - she mainly laps her tongue around in the water and gets drenched but she likes it! Also a 'non-sucker'. X

DoingTheSwanThing · 25/02/2013 17:49

My 6mo bottle refusing twins are both quite happy with a tommee tippee cheap one. Took a few goes to figure out what to do with it and if they're in a hurry need a hand to guide it towards mouths.
FWIW none of my three ever got on with anything more high-tech. Those valves are blummin' hard to suck!
