does anyones 7 year old play rugby, my son wants to start playing. I have found a team, but I'm not sure if they have to have certain criteria or anything. does he have to know how to play before starting?

my 4 (nearly 5) year old DS does! He joined one of the local rugby clubs and plays every Sunday. They have different age groups (and girls play too), so what they do varies - much of my 4 year old's rugby training includes games like stuck-in-the-mud, British Bulldog etc as well as ball skills and rugby basics. The next age group up (which I guess your son would be in) would have more rugby skills and would be playing tag rugby. There are no criteria and you don't need to know how to play before starting.

There's a great group called RugbyTots - my 3yo DD has just started and they do classes for 7yos too. Worth checking the website to see if there's a group near you, it's brilliant.

RugbyTots is v expensive though compared with a local rugby club - we pay £45 per YEAR as opposed to (I think) about £25 per month for our nearest RugbyTots. The club plays outside though, so costs are probably lower as there is no hall to hire.

My 2 year old goes to rugby tots and it's totally free, through out local sure start centre. Maybe depends on where you live?

Rugby Tots does sound expensive. I pay £95 a year (in total) for my three boys, now 10, 7 and 6 who have been playing since they were 4. They absolutely love it - but you need to be able to stand out in the FREEZING cold for hours too - rugby always seems to go on for much longer than football.... I'd head down to your local rugby club and if he likes it you'll need to get him some skins (really important for the cold months) and rugby/football boots (if he doesn't already have them). They will teach him everything he needs to know. Enjoy!!

My 12 year old ds1 has played since he was 5. It's a great sport, great for discipline. He played 'tag' rugby up to a certain age and started contact a few years ago. Very physical game though, he has broke his collarbone and a finger. He loves it though and dp is a coach. We absolutely love rugby in ths house.

My dad would love this thread we are hoping to get my DS into a football club but my dad thinks football is for thugs and is begging us to put him into rugby never heard of rugby tots so will have to google it. Big arguments going on between my dad and dh at the moment over football and rugby but sure they are both winding each other up a bit now as they are never going to agree!!

Assuming it's Rugby Union it'll be tag for a seven year old. It's a great game and I'm sure he'll pick it up in no time.
