Used reusables with ds from when he was about 8 months until 18 months. It was pretty stressful. He's a heavy soaker (would go through a tots bots, thick booster or two, and a wrap in around an hour) and was still pooing up to 8 HUGE ones a day. Tbh it was a lot of -stinky- work and after we went on holiday we just got back into disposables.

I'm thinking of trying again with new baby, is it true that girls really wet and poo less? Ds poos and wees far more than any other kids we know, but particularly more than girls. If so, I'm tempted!

What do I need to start us off? We were using a mix of tots, bumbles, kissaluvs, wee notions... and motherease wraps. all are in size 2, although to be honest the wraps have worn out. Plus most of the nappies are blue and they think this is a girl!

i don't think anyone can tell you whether your new baby will wee or poo less... even if it is a girl!
i don't think there are any hard or fast rules with this one!

BUT.... seeing as you have stuff already it's worth a go!
have you considered doing terry squares as a cheaper option to start with?
does your local council offer any incentives?

lunavix · 30/04/2006 22:00

No to local council, they've just done their first ever real nappy promotion and it was a WALK lol with a talk after and that's it! And they only talked terry squares!

I'm not keep on terries... a mindee had them and it was so much faffing compared to ds. Plus they're an even bigger faff on chunky babies and ds is rather chunky too.....

I don't know if I'd be inclined to buy new. I bought some blue nippa tots which have gone a little thin, some green and yellow which should still be okay but are size 2 and look HUGE. Would definately need new wraps anyways cos of the size. Don't know about the kissaluvs, they may be too big, the weenotions definately are they are HUGE.

there are such cute wraps and nappies for little girls! I've been using cloth since dd2 was about 10 weeks and have just gotten back into using them after a break during the past few months ( terrible morning sickness with number 3)
I don't know about other girls, but mine does a poo about once a day, and isn't a particularly heavy wetter. We started off using kissavluv size ones, tots size 1, wee notions (can't remember the size) and sandy's small. Now that I've started using them again, all are quite tight on her and have ordered size 2 in kissaluvs ( my fave) and some tots as well. Wraps I need to go up a size as well. I don't fancy having 2 in cloth, so am hoping to have dd2 trained before I have the baby.
one thing I was told was to wait until they are a bit bigger as their legs are pretty scrawny for most cloth unless you buy tiny sizes which I think is a waste of money
good luck with it!

lunavix - when you say that your ds would go through a Tots and boosters in an hour, what do you mean? Would they leak onto his clothes? Or was the wee just reaching the outside of the nappy in this time? Sometimes when I change DS the entire nappy will be soaked, front to back and even the tabs. This is usually when he's slept for 12 or 13 hours at night.

I can commiserate with the poo - DS is the same. What sort of liners did you use? I use reusable liners made from cut up cloth sheets. The poo almost peels (sorry for TMI!) off these if left to 'set' a bit. I leave them in a lidded nappy bin during the day, and rinse them all last thing at night. Sometimes I'll do the nappy during the day (if it's very wet, I worry a bit about the wee rotting them, probably unneccesarily!), but I do all the pooey liners at night. Then I only need to bleach my sink once. I find the liners a lot easier to rinse off than terry or fleece, and as they're huge, there's no poo on the nappy terry to get off.

Coloured tots do seem to go thinner more quickly IMO than Tots. I had DS in size 2's quite happily by about 3 months, but I did use the size 1's before then.

Did you mean you would consider 2nd hand? I find you can often pick up cheap Tots size 1's on the various nappy forums, as a lot of people buy them and then quickly move onto size 2's.

Is your DH supportive of cloth? Mine does the rinsing, and I wash and dry the nappies, so we split the work. It doesn't really feel like any effort at all, although I must say if we use disps for the odd weekend away it does feel almost too easy! :)

I'm also due August with my second child. I have bought mainly tots off ebay and the nappy lady ads to use. I used disposables on my first ds, but like you, have found out I am expecting a girl this time round. Also, I have only just got my ds out of nappies/pull ups (he's just over 3) and I'm hoping that reuseables will encourage potty training earlier.

The two women I know that have girls tell me they are heavy wetters, but they are in disposables. One of the girls has quite a few poopy nappies, but she's a giant and eats tons so what goes in must come out. On the other hand my ds (17 months) is nothing like your ds in terms of wetting - he would take about three or four hours to completely soak an unboosted tots, so it does seem to be the individual child rather than the gender.
My ds can produce 4 or 5 poopy nappies a day and is in cloth, but it's not that much of a faff and I just think of the money I'm saving - Oh and how much cuter he with his cloth bum. Grin

Thanks for replies everyone!

I've decided new baby is in cloth, bought it a ton of nappies already, plus me and dh are going into business selling them lol!

I'm still not sure if I'll put ds back in them, to clarify laura he would literally have a huge wet patch down his trousers in around an hour, in a thick tots, booster, liner plus wrap! But we're going to give it a complete new start with the new one, plus I think ds will find himself back in his reusables soon Grin
