My ds1 is 3.6 and he stands up to wee and then will put the seat down, turn around and sit down if he needs a poo. He started by sitting down to do everything and started standing up to wee around the time he turned 3 - he wanted to because dh does.

My ds is 3.2 and will only sit on the toilet on a potty seat - will not stand like his daddy. Not a major problem - just have to make sure his 'little man' is pointed downwards and not at you otherwise you have to jump back quickly out of the way!!

My DS2 (who is not the easiest to train) is now insisting that he stands up & wees like his big brother! He only just reaches the toilet, but insists that he must wee this way.
I found that I got wee everywhere when he used the potty, as he was often not tucked in properly!

Ds was 2.2yrs when he trained and insisted on standing from the start. Took him about 3wks to perfect his aim but he is fine now. Although quite funny to watch him as he puts the seat up and just hangs his bits over the rim..pmsl

If he is pooping he will sit down to wee and poo at same time.

My first born son finally got the hang of toilet training aged 22 months when his grandfather pointed out he could pee in a grate standing up. (I rolled my eyes!). But he loved this, and after this revelation was trained in a week.

DGS is a sitter at age 3, so we tried the standing up and peeing in the grate. He also enjoys it! But it hasnt made a blind bit of difference to his reliability. OK so are all the boys in my family exhibitionists?

Has he seen a male role model using the loo in this way?

My son started sitting and after 3 weeks prefers standing. He's very tall so can shoot over the top. Quite a good aim actually.

Bozza · 04/05/2006 16:21

I think the usual is to start off sitting and then graduate to standing. That's what DS did.

jabberwocky · 04/05/2006 16:23

Mine has stood from the start and his aim has always been quite good, actually. He does lean forward and brace himself against the wall so I guess that helps.

sits and pushes willy down to ensure it goes in the loo Grin
