Anyone use terry squares? Which type and which accessories?

Reading all the real nappy threads has convinced me to try it too. I am confused and perplexed at the huge variety of shaped nappies and really a bit sick of reading about them. Been as I used terry squares successfully 20+ years ago I thought these should be my first port of call.

Now all the accessories have changed. No pins but nippas. Pants are wraps and are just as numerous as the nappies.

So help me out. Which pants/wraps for a 5 month/13lb girl? Pins? nippas? where from?

Any recommendations / ones to avoid when considering the terry squares? Last time I bought the best quality I could afford.

I'm thinking about using terries with my baby (due Sept). I used totsbots for ds but didn't switch until he was about 15 months. The totsbots won't fit new baby until he/she's about a year.

Nippas are fab and you'll find them a doddle compared to pins. Look on the nappylady website for lots of great tips including stuff about the nippa. You can buy nippas at John Lewis or order them when you order your nappies. I've bought from the nappylady and kittikins.

The best wraps on the market seem to be motherease ones (again you'll see them on the nappylady site). I certainly didn't have as many wraps as nappies - I bought 14 nappies and 3 wraps initially, bought a second wrap about 8 months later ( though as I say this was for a 15 month old). If you want to wash nappies at 60 degrees, make sure your wraps wash at 60 too.

Other differences for 20-ish years ago are that lots of people use fleece liners inside the nappy. You can buy a mtre of fleece very cheaply and just cut it up.

The other thing is that most people seem to "dry pail" which means just rinse off yucky nappy in loo, bung in nappy bucket and tranfer nappies to machine when your bucket's full. No need to soak nappies first.

Hope that helps a bit. I'm sure you'll get a lot of advise on here.

Little ewe terries v v thick and can be iffy to nippa something to do with the loops. I have mothercare ones and they do nippa well but not the best for absorbancy, I mean they go 3-4 hours but are pretty wet on coming off and this has been the case since about 5 months.

Also recommend \link{http://www.thenappylady.co.uk/Shopping/ProductDetails.asp?ProductID=20\nappy lady} for info/advice.
\link{http://www.kittykins.co.uk/cloth-nappies/type/8\kittykins}. I would get medium motherease airflow wraps \link{http://www.kittykins.co.uk/wraps/type/2/brand/mother-ease\wraps}

3 wraps plenty to start with, you can always sell them when you need to up a size.

you could try lollipop they have advisors that come to your home to show the whole range it's a fab service, see if there is anyone in your area -website is www.teamlollipop.co.uk.

I love my terries, I use them with a motherease rikki wrap or a onelife popper wrap.

good luck

which terries do you use moonshaddow?

satine · 30/04/2006 18:39

My friend is a lollipop advisor and it really is a fantastic service. She hires out samples of different types of nappies so that you can see what they're like before you buy them. If you have one in your area I'd also highly recommend them!

I used terry square nappies (I think came from mothercare - had them cheap).
Nappy nippa - gots from Tots Bots and ordered boosters from tots bots for heavy wetting.
Placed the booster inside the terry square and also used a nappy liner (get roll from Waitrose or online companies).
Used nippa to do up and use plastic waterproof pants from Boots.
When lo got to toddler stage used tots bots and liners and boots pants as they finally fitted properly.

moonshaddow · 30/04/2006 19:28

I got mine from lollipop, they are slightly more expensive than say mothercares but are fantastic quality and nippa really well. they also do a really thick unbleeched one which is a bit special.

peaches27 · 30/04/2006 19:53

tassis, what sort of fleece do you use to make liners? Does it have to be the thin, very fine type or what?

Hi peaches, I just bought a metre of bog standard white fleece from John Lewis. I'd bought one fleece liner from the nappy lady (or maybe it was free with my order) and I used this as a template to cut the others round.

Skribble · 30/04/2006 20:18

I used terry squares (from Mothercare as well I think). Good old fashioned nappy pins, again mothercare and plastic/ rubbery pants with poppers at the sides. I also used flushable liners.

I thought wraps were far to expensive plus you have to get different sizes, whereas with sqaures you just fold them differently depending on size and if boy or girl.

i used terry squares... just regular ones from boots and mothercare.
preferred the boots ones but can't really remember why.

I used litewraps, from twinkleontheweb.co.uk... cheapish and a nice fit over a terry nappy.

starlover · 30/04/2006 21:38

you can also buy nappy pins from twinkle too...

don't bother with mothercare pins.. they bend and they don't lock properly

Nightynight · 30/04/2006 22:28

I used terry squares, nappy pins, disposable liners, and plastic tie pants from Boots (v cheap, limited life, prone to leaks, but very soft on legs.)
I did use disposables at night and when going out, but I found that terries compared very favourably. They just looked so much more comfortable!

One of my local freecycle friends swears by Bambino Mio. You can get them at a discount through one of our local health food shops at £5 each. Dont know if thats good or not.

I thought I read on here or on babyworld that these were on sale in Boots too!

Anyone used these??

I have used terries on my 19yo (when he was a baby of course) and my now 2.5yo.
If you are used to using terry squares, I would say the Little Ewe terries are great quality nappies.
Fastening - nippas or pins. depends what you prefer but nippas are great once you get used to them.
For wraps can't beat Mother-ease - airflow (popper) for older babies.
The shaped nappies are not a problem apart from the huge choice available, but good starters are

Motherease one-size with snap-in booster and Tots Bots size 2. As far as I'm concerned you can't go wrong with either of them.

peaches27 · 03/05/2006 16:21

The Junior Joy terries were cheap and cheerful. They look very thin to me, but I have washed them and we will see. Thank God they didnt cost a fortune. Actually as we are more used to terries than anything (after first born) we dont mind the towelling thing and I know you can always use two if one isnt enough. At least mother in law and mum know how to operate them too!

Using these today. We have done alright so far, using a cloth nappy a fleece liner and a disposable liner. Her skin felt dry and no probs except the wrap seemed to leave a few red lines on her thighs, so I went up to the next size. We had a leak when she did a runny poo and it came over the waistband, but the poo was runnier and larger than usual because she didnt go yesterday and we had fruit today! I used the kite fold at first, but I am now on the the Chinese fold. I am using pins.

The early morning feed will be interesting because my partner does it and its a long time since he did a cloth nappy. I will leave him one ready folded and a disposable in case he bottles out!

My top tip for using terry squares is Don't use pins use masking tap to tie them down. Just tear a piece of (no scissors needed) and stick on the bit where all the pieces come together. No fear of hurting your baby accidentally, and when nappie is wet they don't stick very well anymore so easily disposed of. Also quicker with a wriggly baby.

peaches27 · 05/05/2006 17:11

Thanks for that tip, will give it a go.

We have been fine during the day with these terries and I have found the jo fold best having also tried the kite and the chinese fold. The fleece liners are good too. But during the night one nappy wasnt enough and the baby and bedclothes ended up wet through.

I am not convinced by the Bummis/cotton bottom wraps I have either. They still make rings around the thighs which disappoints me. I am even trying a pair of normal plastic pants to see if they mark the leg less.

terry squares, nappy nippas, fleece liners. I bought a couple from nature babies and used them as a pattern to make the rest myself.

agree with the dry pailing... I just throw a liner/wipe etc with a couple of drops of tea tree oil on it - keeps it smelling okay - then it just gets thrown in the wash with everything else.

plastic pilchers/pants to go over the top.

Started with some muslin nappies at first - less bulky.

started with origami/chinese fold and now we have the kite fold.
