Almost 3 week old ds, what should I be doing with him in the evening?

Just wondering about this, at the minute he is just in his pram until I'm going to bed as I don't want to put him in a room away from me. Should I be putting him to 'bed' in the evening to sort of get a routine going? Confused

Any advice in this?

No! You'll barely remember the first few months, and he certainly won't. I wasted so much energy with my first, worrying about this routine rubbish. Relax, cuddle him while watching telly or MNing, feed him.

There's plenty of time when he's significantly more alert, to sweat the small stuff. Enjoy.

Congratulations!
I have a 12 week old dd. Before she was born I was under the impression that routine was everything, and had a very rose-tinted view of what things would be like. As it is, she has spent every evening downstairs with us (feeding/cuddlng) until she really goes off to sleep at 9.30ish. My opinion now is to just go with things - if you're happy to have him downstairs with you then why change things? There's plenty of time for routine when he's a bit older, enjoy this cuddly newborn period!

If I could go back in time, I would just cuddle mine.

Just do what makes you happy.

No point in routine or anything, he can't remember what's going on yet.

Mine lay on a pillow on my lap while I worked my way through a great box set. At that age they didn't sleep until 10pm or so.

Keep him with you, cuddle him feed him enjoy him. That's all. Smile

DS was downstairs with us in the early days, then when he started falling asleep a bit earlier we tucked him in his Moses basket upstairs and lay in bed watching TV very quietly! It doesn't last very long.

The advice is to keep them in the same room as you while they sleep until 6 months (SIDS risk).

My 7 month is in the middle of our wooden floor, asleep where he crawled to face down snoring away.

When I go to bed I'll scoop him up. For now though I'll just step over him to get myself a glass of wine!

Lepreporn · 18/02/2013 21:33

Enjoy him. Lots of cuddles. My little baby is 8 months now and it seems like a blink.

Herrena · 18/02/2013 21:36

Ours got put in his pram in the other room at that age so we could a) hear him but b) feel like we had five minutes of 'us'-time!

If you'd like a routine for yourselves then that is fine. Don't bother doing it for him though, he is far too small to remember....

cuddle! at some point you find they 1. start to get into a deeper sleep earlier in the eve and 2. get more distracted by lights and tv. then you can think about bedtimes and putting them somewhere quiet in eve (for us a corner of livingroom , then our bedroom). until then enjoy evenings cuddling and cooing
