Hi mummies. I could do with some advice please. I'm breast feeding my 9 day old daughter and have one breast that is agony to use. Will I produce enough milk from the remaining breast or do you think I will need to go buy formula? Thank you. X

I'd repost in the Breast and Bottle feeding topic- probably more help there

Thank you, I'll try that Smile

Hi, congratulations on your baby!

My advice would be to seek help from your GP, midwife or a breast feeding counsellor in case you have mastitis or something else causing the pain.

I have had pain in one breast when feeding my DCs due to a slightly inverted nipple. Could it be that? Have you tried using nipple shields?

With DC1 I kept feeding from the painful side and in the end it was just a small pain when she latched on. I kept going until she was weaned into food, then dropped feeding from that side.

With DC2 I stopped feeding from the painful side quite early on and did produce enough milk. After all, my friend feeds her twins quite happily!! I did introduce a bottle, but this was for other reasons.

Good luck!

There's a breast and bottle feeding topic on here (under feed the world) where you will probably get more advice. I would contact your midwife or phone one of the breast feeding help lines about this. Is it the nipple or the breast that's painful? Could you express from that side if its too painful to feed? It's possible to make enough milk from just one breast but it would be much better to fix the problem

Are you still under the care of your midwife at 9 days pp? If so, just get her to have a little look at your attachment, if its slightly off it could be causing your boob to not be drained properly and getting engorged (if the pain is whole boob) Until you can see her it might be worth trying a different hold, perhaps try feeding her lying down and see if that makes any difference at all?

And as marzipan said, absolutely worst case scenario, it is entirely possible to feed from one boob only. Think how someone with twins would do it Wink

Definitely express for a bit if you can't feed. I used nipple shields successfully for.months. Try big branches of boots. Good luck!
