Tongue tie feeding problem.

Valentines day I had my beautiful dd2 and an very thrilled but unfortunately we hit a little bump in the road with the feeding. My dd seems to have a slight tongue tie and it's making feeding her really quite painful. She wants to feed all the time at the moment which is tough as I'm really sore. We have an appointment with the tongue tie clinic at my hospital on Wednesday but that is three days away. Any tips on how I can make it more comfortable to feed until then and any experiences with tongue tie? I'm also really super nervous about them to 'the cut'. Whenever dd cries it just breaks me :( thanks everyone

Congrats on your Valentines baby!
Dividing a tie is much less traumatic for Mum than baby (DS1 and DS2 have both had ties cut)! - DS1 objected to being swaddled more than the cut. Putting them straight on the boob afterwards seemed to sort all the problems.

Feeding all the time is possibly to stimulate your milk production? And MIGHT be unrelated to the tie.

With DS1 I preferred Lansinoh, but DS2 Kamillosan seemed to work better.

Some people may also recommend nipple shields, but if you possibly can, I'd steer clear.

You may get more response if you post on breast and bottle feeding.

Congratulations on your new arrival! Great that you have Identified the TT and have taken steps to get it sorted. This will make things much easier. How about expressing and doing some cup feeding meanwhile? This doesn't have to be every feed but may give your nipples a bit of a break.

Hi

I have a 13 week old who had his tongue tie procedure done at 8weeks, I found the first 3 weeks or so weeks extremely painful due to his poor latch!

although we got over the pain beforehand, we had to deal with the constant feeding until 2 weeks after the procedure while he learned how to latch on again (they say this takes around 10 days on average)

I found lansinoh really helpful applying any time DS wasn't attached to me (which wasn't often Smile)

My breast feeding support worker suggested hand expressing a couple of drops of milk and rub them in you your nipples as it has healing qualities which I did as well, every time DS wasn't attached!

If DS ever did give me 10 minutes break I walked around with nipple sheilds on (although I never used them for feeding) I looked an idiot Blush but would rather as my clothes would chafe my nipples really aggravating them between feeds.

There is also the old wives tale of putting cabbage leaves in your bra (which I never tried but my midwife still recommends Hmm)

I know what you're going through, I found it really tough so I hope this helps and keep up the good work

My DS had tongue tie. It got snipped at about 3 days. The procedure was fine. DS barely woke up. But my goodness my nipples were sore (and cracked and bleeding). I was alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol for a back problem I had from labour and once I'd had my daily quota I really found breast feeding much more painful, so if things are very bad maybe use some pain relief too.

My DS (now 9!) had tongue tie and struggled to feed. Eventually, after being told that I wasn't feeding him in the right way Angry, we found someone to do a tie-snip (9 years ago, it was normal practice to leave the tongue tie until the child was 5 yrs+). Best thing we ever did - I was very concerned about having it done but DS didn't even cry!! Unfortunately, it had been left too late and DS never re-learnt how to latch on, so he was bottle fed. I would definitely do the tongue tie and please don't worry, your little one will be none the wiser. Many congratulations by the way! Thanks

Good luck for tomorrow! It will be fine, DS had his cut at 4 weeks and was straight on the boob after. I think I was more upset. Make sure you do post op massage after (to stop TT re-attaching). Also, getting cranial osteopathy is a very good idea, if you are anywhere near south london, wandsworth osteopathic centre for children offer free appointments occ.uk.com/

This is a good latch technique; using your thumb and forefinger press your breast (areola area) and make a breast sandwich - do the usual nose to nipple, wait for the gape, then put your breast into her mouth. this should help getting a deep latch.

there's a good facebook support group for TT: www.facebook.com/groups/tonguetiebabies/

We had dd2's tongue tie cut yesterday (she's 12 days). It was so much easier and less awful than I anticipated. She cried but only for a second.

Bf is so hard when it's painful. I don't have any other advice but hang on in there, it does get better.
