I don't have any advice but I want to say persevere no matter how hard it is - I'm a 31-year-old thumb sucker! Think I'll be doing it for life now. My teeth are fine but my poor thumb is getting a bit prune like now.

I give my ds a dummy for naps and bed time as I figure they're easier to get rid of eventually.

How old is your DS?

My DD started sucking her thumb at about 6 months after we'd taken away her dummy. She still sucks it now (2.4) and tbh I don't try to stop her. It's a comfort thing. Young children need the sucking reflex to comfort themselves, it's their own form of self soothing.

I put E45 cream on her thumb when she's being active and not likely to suck it off.

Unless he's sucking it 24/7 I'm not sure there's much you can do.

(Again, this does depend on his age...)

Sorry that's not much help, just my opinion on the matter.

he's 7mths old now and I know he's still very young and irs a comfort thing but im just really concered about how sore his thumb is looking. He's got his bottom 2 teeth aswell so i think their not helping with how sore it becoming

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it too much. 7 months is very young and tbh I'd be happy that he found a way to self-soothe.

The thumb will toughen up and become less sore and once he stops sucking it, it will return to normal.

Just my advice but I would let it be. It's his comfort, don't take it away from him.

I sucked my thumb til I was 7. My mum and dad left me to it really. I felt loved that they did. I think it would have totally traumatised me to have had a huge issue made out of it. I remember at 4 promising my dad I'd stop when I was 5 Grin. My memories of sucking my thumb are that I enjoyed it, it relaxed me and I felt secure.

I stopped of my own accord in public at 7, but probably did still have a sneaky suck in private til I was 9 or 10.

My thumb was/is fine Grin I have lovely straight teeth.

I would worry tbh. Ds found his thumb v early and is still sucking it now at 17mo. I did notice the other day there must have been a blister or something which has now popped and there's some dead skin on there. But it'll toughen up and anything that helps a baby to self soothe is good in my book!

Wouldn't worry.... Stupid iPad keyboard.

My HV advised lansinoh. Have some due to breastfeeding issues so used that when she is awake.Have the same problem as you in that she would not accept a dummy and then found her thumb. I think the issue with the redness is caused by her teeth as well, she chews her thumb a lot as well as sucks it.

chocolatespiders · 08/02/2013 13:07

One he falls asleep make sure it is out of his mouth. dd 9 and still sucks hers.

evertonmint · 08/02/2013 13:28

If it was sore he wouldn't suck it, so probably looks worse than it is. I have 2 thumb suckers, nearly 5 and 2.4. It's their comfort and I would feel terrible about taking it away. My main worry is teeth but dentist keeps an eye on him and says there are no problems yet.

DD got really upset a couple of days ago when she noticed her thumb was all prune like - she must have been sucking it all night! She's been ill so sucking like mad at night, but it means she has been sleeping well despite illness so it's a huge benefit.

The benefits of self soothing and comfort far outweigh the potential disadvantages IMO.
