My ds is 18mths and i was hoping that he would be ready to potty train in the summer so i can let him run around the garden. How do i know if hes ready and do you have any tips etc on to do it.I can tell when hes gonna do a poo but have no idea when hes gonna do a wee. According to my mil he should of been potty trained when he 12mths Grin

Take no notice of mil. If mine is to believed, my dh was potty trained at 6 months! Yeah, right. My ds is now just over 3 and have just started training him. Tried earlier this year but he wasn't having it. If you try and push them before they are ready they won't respond as good. When they start fidgeting with their little man, or jiggling around a bit then say it's time to go to the toilet and take him.

My ds is 2 next month, and the second you take his nappy off,he pees all over the floor Shock. No way is he ready.

Sorry, I ment my ds is not ready, not yours.

My mil says I've no hope now, ds1 is 2 1/2, as I should have been holding him out over newspaper from 3 months...

Not much point in doing it at all if he can't tell when he's going to poo or wee. It's also best if he can pull his own trousers up and down.

18 months is pretty early; children are often not ready until they're well over 2, maybe even closer to 3.

Yeah same with my mil potty trained at 12mths in 3 days! Why do mil speak bs ? well say if i let him run around the garden with no nappy on and just sort of shove the potty under him if he wees etc im not expecting results but i wasnt sure whether i could just get him used to it. I wasnt going to try for another few mths yet.But at the same time i dont want to put off.I think im just hoping potty train him in the garden to save my carpets Grin bad mummy.

But if you follow him around with a potty it's you who's being trained, not him! It won't hurt to leave him nappyless but until he connects the sensation of weeing or pooing with the actual act of weeing and pooing he won't be ready to be potty trained. I found it wasn't something I could do to my timetable, it had to be when dd was ready. Don't be disappointed if he's not ready, he's still very young. You may find he's not ready until next Summer.

Well i feel better knowing that theres no rush thankyou. Im not sure if its a dig at me but mil always comments on seeing 2/3year olds in nappies and how silly parents are for not training them as they would save a fortune. She told me ds should stop bf at 2wks in his cotbed and own room at 3mths, weaned at 4mths and having milky drinks not formula at 10mths. Arrraaaagh she always makes me feel as if im babying ds even though he is only 18mths yet she bloody wont let her little boy go whos 25yrs. Sorry this is prob for another thread.

MILs are laws unto themselves - nod sagely and say "Yes, I'll bear that in mind", then do what feels right for you!

In a lot of cases they do this with potty training because they used terry nappies, which were a pain to use and to launder, so couldn't wait to get their babies out of nappies. I do wonder though whether it was really that the babies were trained or whether it was just that their mothers used to follow them around with a potty - which is not quite the same thing!

Modern nappies are a whole different kettle of fish - it's easier to relax and let the child lead you when you don't have to worry about how you're going to wash and dry the nappies. Even washables are easier these days; when my MIL was potty training my dh she didn't even have a washing machine let alone a tumble drier - which explains why she was in such a hurry to potty train.
