Anyone Else Starting Open Uni This Year?

Hey there :)

Am a 22 year old single mum of a 2yr old boy and am starting my access course in March. (Am doing the psychology based route). Just wondered if any other mums on here were starting up soon too? Been out of the game a few years so really hoping I can overcome any tiredness, stress etc. Hmm that throws me off as I'll be pretty rusty to start with as it is!

tia! :) xx

Hi,

I am a single mum of 2 boys and will be starting the psychology degree with the open uni in Feb.

Being a student parent is tiring and time management is key but you'll get through it. x

Hi. Cheers for the reply :) Did you do the access course first? Everyone seems to agree that it's down to good time management so I'm hoping if I just stick to it and drink a lot of coffee it'll be fine. Must be tiring if you have two! I find the one pretty cheeky at times :P x

Hi I am on my last year(hopefully., time management, organised notes will get you through. I have 4 kids one with a disability and I have done ok, it's daunting at first but once you get into it it's fine

Thanks. We do struggle with sleep, as little one has clubfoot and wears a bar at night (which he still hates, almost 2 years later). Determined as hell though :P

Having children is tiring and my kids are hard work during the day but I study when they go to bed and get up an hour before them.

I also have a routine that I stick to in order to keep up with housework and getting all the other mum duties done.

I didn't do the access course because I previously attended a brick uni but couldn't keep it up due to lack of reliable and affordable childcare. Determination will get you through and I have already seen with the OU that they seem very helpful to those new learners and I feel my study skills have already improved going through my module activities.

Thanks for the reply. I considered travelling to the local uni but it seems crazy when the open uni course seemed like it would fit our lives and routine better :)

I'm starting in April, an Open degree. First course is business as this primarily what I want to specialise in.
Have 3 boys at home, tiny bit worried but have evenings so should be ok.
Tad nervous and worried but I'm also determined as hell!

foihnula · 29/01/2013 18:55

Same. He goes down at 7 so I know I have the time but you know what it's like :P early mornings, long days etc so hoping I just get used to being more tired, like when he was little. It's for both of us though so that on it's own should be enough...(I hope)! Good luck :)

Good luck to you too!
We'll be fine, we'll be great in fact!
I'm up at 6/6:30 as it is I can't get up any earlier.
Evenings and one afternoon a week it is.
I've applied for a tuition fee loan, how complicated is one form? My brain hurts!

foihnula · 30/01/2013 11:26

I know! I'm shocked I didn't balls it up and get it sent back 'incorrectly completed' :P

I started last year and love it. My husband and I had a row over a number of things, he always blames things on my course, he put his foot down saying I had to stop. I then realise the course was more important to me than my H. He hasn't said it again 7 months later and has become very supportive

MeGrin I'm so excited but worried about balancing my time.
My DS is 10 months. My DP is in the Army and only comes home at weekends so I'm pretty much on my own.
I just completed a credit transfer for the Open degree.
Iv got to do 30 2nd year credits - iv registered onto this module which starts in May, then I'll start the 3rd year modules in September/October.
I'm starting with one which I guess is good as it will ease me back in gently (ish).
Hopefully I'll work out how to fit everything in.
Good Luck to everyone starting in April x

I started an open degree last October. Currently studying tu100, my digital life and will be studying at least one of the maths modules next.

So far, so good. The course materials are excellent and a very interesting subject.
