Sleep routine

Hi. I have a 6 week old and wondered realistically what I should expect from him at night time. He goes down around 8 and will sleep till his next feed anywhere between 11 and 12. He will then go back down for 2 to 3 hours then after that be wide awake and normally after getting up to him 2 or 3 times from around 3am we end up going downstairs because he's wide awake, or seems to be. He does end up napping when we are downstairs. Is this how it should be at his age? I don't mind but I'm just not a fan of 4am starts lol. Should I delay his bedtime perhaps, but then do I still let him sleep until bedtime? Hope this makes sense and as much advice as poss would be great x

I feel your pain! My dd is now 10wo and getting better but her natural 'awake time' used to be 10pm-2am.

I would definitely advise keeping her in the bedroom during nighttime hours to teach her the difference between night and day.

Thanks. It just extending the time he sleeps in the early hours. I'm hoping when he starts to take bigger feeds he will settle for longer as he is on 3oz bottles every 3 to 3.5 hours at the mo xx

Thanks. How do I go about his routine as putting him to bed at 8pm seems to early if he will only sleep 7-8 hours with feeds. I thought that's why he was waking early, so do I put him to bed later? And when he's waking at 4am and appears wide wake what do I do with him? Sorry for all the questions.

If he is sleeping for 7 or 8 hours ideally you want him to move that block to later in the night, so I'd keep him downstairs with you and maybe does his bath at 9 pm.

When he is wide awake at 3 pm, what is he doing and where is he sleeping.

Have you seen this book or read 31 ways to get your baby to sleep and stay asleep?. They might help Smile

I read and was told that until 6-8 weeks babies can be all over the place regarding Day and Night. If you treat any wakings before 6-7am as night time this might help?
i.e don't turn on the lights or interact too much.

This may sound odd but a book I've been reading (I'm trying to find all the answers.. I dont think I will!!) states that early waking can be from going to be too late!

You could try bringing the bed time forward by 20 mins everyother day and see what that does?!

Good luck!

My DS is 9 weeks, goes to bed at 7, fights the sleep until 8ish and wakes up lots in the night! Then ends up coming into bed with me at 5ish for a feed then sleeps on and off until 8.

I could be wrong too but think Elizabeth Pantley says in the No Cry Sleep Solution that early mornings can be linked with late bedtimes. Is that the book you are reading Charla ?

Agree that they have trouble distinguishing day from night and you from them even.

Think it really helps to keep things dark and quiet at night and busy and bright in the day. Getting them outside is important too, though I know how hard it can be at this time of year.

We had some success with the ncss and did everything Qtp did but our DS had tongue tie and then developed other medical problems that affected his sleep. Won't tell you how old he was before he slept through, but just hope you get better luck Smile
