How far do you walk to school?

We are looking to move house this year and as our DD will be starting school soon, I was wondering what sort of distance would be acceptable for a 3 year old to walk to school (with me obviously!) :-)
Thanks

Less than a mile. Quicker to walk than drive.
How long will your 3 year old walk for?

Tee2072 · 13/01/2013 21:03

My son and I walk 1.5 miles one way. He's 3.7.

I'm getting very fit.

About .75 of a mile.

Takes me 10-15 mins but double that when DD (4) with me.

We live about 2 minutes from school.

dontwanttobefatandforty · 13/01/2013 21:07

1/2 mile one way, with little ones takes about 20mins

SizzleSazz · 13/01/2013 21:07

Our walk is 1.25 miles. DD managed it at 3 but we didn't do it every day, twice a day. My 6 year old would still get very tired if we had to do it every day (she is very active, but also needs lots of rest)

NaturalBaby · 13/01/2013 21:08

1 1/2 miles but we don't walk there and back every day. My boys go on their balance bike and scooter.

welshhouse · 13/01/2013 21:08

She is usually good when we go for walks but if she is tired she can get a bit grumpy. DH thinks a mile is about maximum distance we should be from a school.

About 1/2 mile here, too. Takes 15-20 mins with a 7 and 4-year-olds. The 4-year-old only goes to nursery, so we're up and down it twice more each day with him and it's fine.

pootlebug · 13/01/2013 21:09

Half a mile each way. DS (3.5) does the trip there and back twice as I pick him up at lunch and his elder sister at the end of the day.

nannynick · 13/01/2013 21:10

We used to walk 448 metres (we used GPS one day to track how far it was).

A 3 year old I would say can walk up to 3 miles but not every day. For a walk to school, rather than a walk around the park/woods, I would say you should aim for less than a mile.

Even if you live near a school there is not a guarantee you will get a place there. Check the school admissions policy, distance will be part of it but it may not be that high in the priority list. With luck you will get the local school but it will depend on what other children apply and their circumstances.

Tee2072 · 13/01/2013 21:14

Well my son walks it every day and has been since he started school at 3.3.

So it's 3 miles round trip for him. I walk 6.

Well, to be completely honest, we have gotten a taxi 3 times, I think it was. Grin

We walk 40 minutes to school. Its almost 2 miles. Ds12, dd9 and dd4 all walk and ds2 goes in the buggy. We get the bus home though because it is all uphill!

Tortoise · 13/01/2013 21:23

We walk a mile to school every day. It's not much fun when its raining heavily though!

welshhouse · 13/01/2013 21:26

I would also have a pushchair with dd2 in so I suppose I could maybe have a buggy board in case dd1 gets tired but I've not used one before so I'm not sure if they're any good?

google says it's 0.9mile.

I started a training regime in the summer holidays, and bought DS a scooter. It was fine :)

wonderstuff · 13/01/2013 21:33

.8 miles - just looked it up on googlemaps Smile takes 20 mins with ds in the buggy and is up a very steep hill. Going to have to start driving after half term because ds' playgroup is moving and it will be in the opposite direction from my house. I'm gutted I really enjoy the school run, is my only workout of the week, don't know what I'll do for exercise. Sad

Fuzzymum1 · 15/01/2013 14:56

We live about a 5-7 minute (depends on DS's motivation!) walk from the school gate that the children go in and out of. If I'm in and out of school in the day (I volunteer at school) then I use the carpark entrance and can be there in about 3 minutes :D
