Do I potty train on holiday or not? Opinions needed

My dd is 2 next month when on holiday. We are going to be staying in a villa with a pool, nobody else nearby and lots of hard floors. Also it is going to be a 2 week holiday which I rarely take so...I wondered if it would be a good time to attempt to potty train as it'll be the last time I get such a good opportunity until next year (I work you see).

It's just that it seems much earlier than I had initially planned, and I don't want to ruin my holiday and/or end up going back on myself.

The only signs I get are that she is doing the following:

  • sits every evening before bath and/or in the morning for a story or two on the potty
  • when we have our nappy-free hour before bath she no longer wees all over the place but saves it until she gets in the bath when she says 'wee wee, bath' almost as soon as she gets in.

What do you reckon? Take the opportunity of being with her 24 hours a day in warm weather to push it or leave it for another later date in the winter probably?

Leave it. Have a great holiday, don't risk ruining with the frustrations of potty training. You have all summer to tackle that one.

I would leave it. Then when you get back start it over a weekend and then let whoever cares for your DD take over. I don't see why you would need to wait until winter to try. Also what about the return journey?

I probably would if my child was a bit older. But I dont think you'll do it in 2 weeks if your dd is only just 2, although it depends on her, of course. No point going to the effort, if it is wasted!

I also work in an office full time, I am not making a big effort with dd2, who is 2,5. I will leave it a bit until she is older, hopefully it will be easier. sigh - just another casualty of

I trained both mine while we were on holiday, mine were around the same age.I just started through the day by the pool with no nappy on. If there is nobody else around then no costume on them either. It doesnt mean you have to persevere when you get home, just see if she is comfortable with using a strategically placed potty. Accidents happen, no big deal and as you say lots of hard floors so cleaning up is no problem and any washing can be dried far easier in the warmer weather.

If no success it doesnt matter, think of all the nappies youve saved tho GrinI wouldnt even think about it as potty training, just an indication to you of if she is ready to accept using a potty.

Rubles you deserve a holiday, so have one ! Trust me, if your dd is "ready" she will "get it" in days once you're back home. As Bozza said, your carer can pick up where you leave off, whether it be nanny or nursery or childminder. You could always get off to a good start on a Fri evening when you know there's a quiet weekend ahead.
I've trained 3, all v. quickly, and am toying with starting on no4 soon. He's 2.3. Just got some cheap pants today in fact!

Thank you for your replies to this. I had decided not to do it but to just be quite relaxed about bare bottoms on holiday. However, last night dd asked to do a wee wee, and did a big one on the potty after arranging all her teddies around her. Then this morning I had to go downstairs for a while and I left her upstairs bare bottomed - I went up 20 minutes later to find a big poo and wee in the potty!!

There was much jubilation all round, I can tell you.

So, as I think she might be ready now, we are off to get big girl pants and will defo carry it on on holiday. I am so proud of her.
