1 year-old having trouble figuring out the sippy cup...

Our son is one and he is still very attached to his bottle of milk. Give him a sippy cup and he makes it a ball or toy. When we take the spill safe off he will take the juice, but it seems that he has not figured out how to suck from a hard object or something like that. Anyway, just wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

with our first we treid about a hundred different cups and wasn't until we reached the same point with our 2nd that we realised that it must be really hard for them to leanr to get the drink for a cup.

With a bottle, when u suck gently the milk comes out, with a cup you not only have a hard object in your mouth, u have to suck quite hard (for a baby) to get anything out. We have a boots cup with a softer spout that ds2 took to quite quickly. and its the only genuinly non spill one i have seen!!!

I don't actually know what a sippy cup is tbh but i wouldn't worry too much yet that he doesn't drink from it properly, he is still learning.

mumofmonsters thank you. A sippy cup might also be called a tippy cup. There is nothing soft about it. I am interested in your boots cup. Where could we get one?

after trying every concocotion of cups available on the market my son settled with the simpelist one i got four for a pound and it is just a plain cup with handles and a lid with a spout attached with three holes! i think the non spill cups are great for parents... but not for babies! they have to bite down on the spout to open the valve and that is just something they dont need to learn to do! we dotn have to bite down on say a sports bottle do we? i think with a simple old fashioned beaker although there are more spillages the baby learns to drink a lot quicker as the juice flows easier or you can tip it up just enought o let the juice run into babies mouth and encourage them to drink xx

Thanks for the experiances everyone. Sounds like I need to go back to the store...all of ours are expensive non-spill.

We've got the avent magic cups and it's only since taking the valves out that we are having any success.

Should have just bought the cheap ones :o

also try taking out the valve that makes them 'non spill' - it does make it v difficult for the babies to get anything out of them

my ds has exactly the same problem. I ended up buying him an old fashioned basic tommee tippee cup with two handles (they do them in boots and tesco)... the liquid just pours out of the holes in the spout so at least he knows there is something in there he is supposed to be drinking! They use them at nursery too! They make a bit of a mess when he flings it around the room but at least he knows there is something there to drink. I am hoping he will progress on to an anyway up cup at some time in the future.

I tried my baby on one type of sippy cup. He couldn't seem to get anything out at all. I tried myself and even I couldn't get a sip out of it! We have had some success with a Magic Cup, but best of all just a beaker with a top with 2 holes in it. A bit messy though. He also loves just a normal plastic cup, but that is very messy!

Our son didn't get on with the usual cups, until we found a fantastic beaker. So great, that all the mums at the baby and toddler group have bought one! It's a tall flask/beaker with a flexible (rubber? - similar to material of latex bottle teats) straw that sticks out at the top, then bends inside the lid when closed. The beauty of it is that the straw is soft and friendly, unlike most other designs, and it delivers lots of fluid for little sucking. It's from mothercare. About 3 quid, I think.

It turned out that our son didn't get on with anything that took too much work for little return (e.g. those spouts with one or two holes didn't give back enough liquid for the hard work it took him, so he gave up quite quickly). As soon as we started him on designs for older kids like the one I described above, he never looked back.
