three year old not drinking HELP

dd1 (nearly three) has had (I think) a mild case of chickenpox, which affected her appetite and she has only eaten small amounts for a week or so. She is not normally a big eater.
Well I have managed to persuade her to eat a little more today BUT she still won't drink Sad.
She has only had a few sips since last Sunday. Luckily I am still bf her - she has been taking more than usual and I am very thankful for it.
I have tried to talk to her about it, and she says she is scared because it will give her a tummy ache and she will drink when she is better. She is still weeing and pooing (though less than usual) but her urine is stronger smelling than usual.
I spoke to my gp and she said not to worry while she was still weeing/pooing and OK in herself. Which she is - but I am worried, because I don't see how this is going to resolve itself.
Any advice/experience?
tia

Hmm.

juice ice lollies? Apple juice very mild on tummies, do half juice, half water.

Or, a cup of water and a really posh/funny spoon to scoop it with? This works on 3 year old ds, who is thrilled by novelty.

Sock puppet telling her to taste a bit of his drink? Again, this would work on ds.

I would just keep reassuring her that her tummy ache is better now and having a drink won't make it come back - but not make a big issue out of it. Maybe get her a fancy straw or a cocktail umbrella or a new 'character' cup if she's still not drinking in a day or so? She won't dehydrate if she's breast-feeding so thankfully that's one less worry.

I know I have been trying not to put too much emphasis on it but I am SO worried Sad
she is genuinely scared about drinking
I am feeling like such a lousy mother

keep b/feeding - that will be doing her the power of good. Just keep offering it to her. Its hard, i know, but she IS drinking from you which is better than not at all. Agree with what your gp says.

Do keep an eye out though for signs of dehydration.

Give it another 24 hours and see.

new cup is good
ice lollies too. she is eating lots of apples and strawberries

you're right - it was tempting today to refuse her bf to make her drink Sad but of course she is getting fluids

ooh yes lollies a fab idea.

marthamoo · 16/04/2006 23:04

Or even something dead simple like making her a 'cocktail' with lots of ice cubes and a slice of lemon. Or would she suck ice-cubes? I'm trying to think of ways to 'up' the novelty value - that would work with my 4 year old.

hunkermunker · 16/04/2006 23:05

Can you pretend she needs medicine and give her weak juice in a syringe? So it tastes like something, I mean - perhaps a juice she's not tasted before?

Might kill two birds with one stone - convince her you're giving her medicine to make her better and get fluids into her.

harpsichordcarrier · 16/04/2006 23:09

all splendid ideas ladies

Oh excellent. Thats a step forward. Funky shaped cubes are good. If you have an ikea near you they do some funky shaped ice cubes too.

hunkermunker · 18/04/2006 09:04

Do you still need me to post the star one, Harpsi? Happy to, obv - couldn't yesterday as didn't have any brown paper!

hunkermunker · 18/04/2006 09:05
