Does daytime sleep breed good night time sleep?

DS (9wks) is in his second 1.5 hour nap of the day - usually he only sleeps for maximum 1 hour periods. I'm terrified he won't sleep tonight and considering waking him up, is this madness? (He'll have another mini nap between now and bedtime anyway)

The worse my dd (19wks) naps the more overtired she gets and she sleeps badly at night. More/longer naps seems to help. Not sure if this is just us???

I think that within reason, good naps = better sleep at night. I wouldn't be allowing a three hour plus nap now that he is past the early newborn weeks, but if he is tired let him have a two hour nap.
Babies need about 15 hours a day of sleep - probably at 2-3 months you are looking at 10 at night best case scenario and 5 hours of naps in the day. If he is doing longer at night then obviously a bit less in the day and of course not all babies need 15 hours. At 8 months mine does 11ish at night (not unbroken sleep) and about 3 in the day. If he doesn't nap well bedtime is a nightmare.

Absolutely. I can tell the difference in DS if he hasn't napped for long enough (2 hours at least), as he's a total rat bag, fights going to bed, and then is unsettled that night.

Fairylea · 21/12/2012 17:03

For us (ds 6 months) it makes no difference at all. Sorry !

mummybare · 21/12/2012 17:06

Yes, definitely. In fact, DD had a couple of 1.5 hour naps and a catnap until she was about 6 mo.

Sorry, that last post was a bit abrupt. (DD was NOT asleep as I was writing it Xmas Grin ) I just meant that I wouldn't worry about that being too much daytime sleep as even an older baby can get that much and sleep well at night. They are growing and learning so much at that age, they need the rest, so don't worry :)

Lovely, thanks all - he woke soon after my post and did have another small nap before bed, fingers crossed for a good night!
