What do u do with a hyper 2yo when the weather is cold and wet?

I'm an exhausted 34week pregnant SAHM with a cranky (teething) and hyper 2yo DS. Although he does a couple of afternoons at nursery (no family near, DH out from 6-8 and often occupied at wkend) in the week our term-time toddler group and craft/soft play group has finished and I'm struggling to cope with his energy at home!

Normally in better weather we would do lots of outdoor stuff like walks, playing in garden, and park/playground but the miserable weather coupled with the fact I get really bad Braxton Hicks (painful and lots) when I do anything remotely physical this time round means its a no go!

Ideas so far...
Library,
walking around Homebase/B&Q,
jumping on bed at home (him, not me for fear of going no labour!),
making fort with sofa, ...

...any other ideas?? Please help.

Buy toddler all in one waterproofs. Find a cafe with a garden/playground with some under cover tables, wear a big coat and take a plastic bag to sit on, let toddler off the leash to play while you sit and drink tea and eat cake. Dry toddler off with a towel before putting back in the car, give drink and biscuit and enjoy a peaceful drive home with toddler asleep in the back. I did this for four months and then again once baby was born. Simples!

Marking my place. Have 16 month old and in the massively tired and sick stage of early pregnancy. Already have toddler waterproof, just need to locate appropriate cafe Smile

Well, we just spent an hour hiding from dinosaurs in a makeshift tent (a clothes horse with a blanket over it) and then running in circles around the rug in our lounge before dancing to Christmas songs. Not sure I'd be up to it at 34 weeks pregnant though!

Wrap him up warm and put him in the garden.

Any local museums? Play doh? Icing rich tea biscuits? Turn lights out and play with torches? Blow bubbles and get them to chase?

I have a book called the Toddlers Busy Book which is quite good for suggestions.

hide and seek and take your time seeking Xmas Grin DD thinks this is hilarious. I have to loudly say 'where's DD' 'oh dear I've lost her' and other such seems to keep her in place longer.

I've taken her to the park and sat in the shelter on my todd while she ran around in her waterproofs. Home for a nice warm bath afterwards.

I've also stuck her in the bath with some bath toy's, shaving foam paint and jugs while I've sat on a stool and read my book with an ovaltine.

Wallace · 20/12/2012 21:05

Also sit in the empty bath and play with cars

Mibby · 20/12/2012 21:06

Have just ordered that book stella, thanks for the tip :)

StellaNova · 20/12/2012 22:17

Ooh I should claim some commission Wink

There is another one called Siblings Busy Book with activities for different ages to do together which might be good once the baby arrives although I found it tends to just say "baby will enjoy watching their sibling doing x" which was never the case!

Build a Duplo tower, get them on a step stool to make it higher and higher. Let them smash it down.

waterproof suit + jumping in puddles, crunching in frost

Do you live anywhere near the coast? Beach still fun atm (waterproof suit again)

Putting out food for birds and watching them come to eat it

Go to pet shop and gawp

Add food colouring to sink / bathwater

Make a game of taking stufff upstairs (clean washing works best). He has to take up one item at a time to appropriate room, fast as he can upstairs, slow downstairs (so its safe). Time him. Give him loads of encouragement and a treat afterwards (possibly one of the activities above). If you can get him to enjoy it it'll be helpful when the baby comes too. You might need to position yourself at the bottom of the stairs so you can see he isn't doing anything dangerous (like hurling himself down them).

Soft play. Ours was total god send through subsequent pregnancies. Even better if they let you sit in the sofa with food while you watch the dc play. We still go every week for a cuppa/breather/wear the kids out session.
