chicken pox - she's scratched her skin red raw

Help, my poor little girl (20 mths) has chicken pox and eczema. She's scratched her skin so badly that she has open sores now. I have put sodium bicarbonate in her bath and smothered her in calamine lotion plus I have now put some savlon on the sores. Is there anything else I can do for her. It looks agony for her :(

Have you tried giving her piriton which will help stop the itching and we found e45 anti itch cream really effective. Horrible isn't it. We ended up giving two or three baths a day as it seemed to soothe it and they were happy in there for a short while. Hope the worst passes before Xmas.

You can give paracetamol suspension if she has a fever, too.

ElleOhElle · 20/12/2012 11:54

thanks, no haven't tried piriton, will go and get some from the chemist. It's so horrible, I feel so bad for her.

piriton even says on it that it can be used to calm the itching of chickenpox so give that a go.

Have you tried porridge oats in the bath? Pop some in a cloth bag under the tap and it makes the bath creamy

SquidgersMummy · 20/12/2012 14:06

Seconding porridge oats - in muslin or clean cotton sock with elastic band - my dd has eczema and they make bath time bearable - also can you put socks on hands as scratch mits - we rely on mits a lot otherwise she scratches head badly but guessing mits won't fit a 20 mth old!

And are you using the aqueous calamine? More moisturising than the plain calamine.

YYY to piriton, fab stuff. Ibuprofen has anti-inflammatory properties too.

And long socks tucked up her sleeves if mitts don't stay on for anti-scratch devices.

Izzyschangelingisarriving · 20/12/2012 14:14

Mine were plastered but I did this as a regime and they were fine.

Calpol and piriton as a matter of course.

Bathe twice daily 20 minutes a time in a bath of bicarbonate of soda, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and lavender oil.

Leave to drip dry so oil stays on skin.

Then Calamine cream

iseetinselandtantrums · 20/12/2012 14:16

Pure aloe vera gel from the chemist and keep it in the fridge so really soothing. Heaps better than calamine.

thanks everyone, great tips. Hopefully she'll be over the worst soon x
