Dentist and Fillings

My DS is at the dentist today for a couple of fillings and feel really guilty about it all. We have since a very early age been brushing twice a day and we have not gone overboard with the sweets etc but for a while we used to give him apple juice and milk and I am told that this could be the cause of it. The dentist wasnt very helpful and said that it was all our fault and we should only be giving him Water and no sweets!!! (would love to know if any parents actually do this).

Fingers crossed that it all goes okay but i just wondered does anyone know whether they will use an injection or do it without as they are only his milk teeth. My DS is nearly six

Hi Smile my ds who is 9 has had to have 3 teeth filled & subsequently removed & the dentist said exactly the same things to me. My kids have sweets about once a week & rarely have juice. I'm certain a lot of kids have a lot more rubbish than they do! I also felt bad & tried to encourage longer brushing etc but to be fair he does brush pretty well twice a day... To have them out he had injections but not for the fillings. Hope your ds gets on ok x

My 5 year old DD had a filling last week and they didn't do an injection - the dentist said they try not to do an injection unless they need to do a lot of work. I think apple juice was the culprit for us too as my daughter has been drinking it most meals. Am now only allowing fruit juice at breakfast and milk or water the rest of the time. The dentist was quite nice and said my daughter seemed to be brushing well but I still felt awful that she needed a filling.
