DS is 19mo and says the cats name (first word and only word for about 3 months), dada, no and ja (Dutch for yes), and about 3 or 4 animal sounds. He is bilingual, so that might have something to do with it. I know he says less than some of his peers might but I haven't been worried so far because his understanding seems fine (he can point to the right pictures when I say words). I think he's just taking some time getting a grasp on how to actually create the different sounds deliberately (he babbles a lot).

DS had probably 10 recognisable words at 18mo, which included mummy and daddy. At 2.1 he now says closer to 200 and is stringing short sentences together very well. His pronunciation is also excellent so most words are now recognisable. What a difference 6 months makes! If you don't see a marked improvement by 2yo i'd get her checked out, but she sounds perfectly normal at this stage so i don't think you need worry. Some days i literally can't shut DS up, he has verbal diarrhoea so bad Grin

I have 3 children - you child sounds great to me.

first child - said mummy daddy, no, yes, and maybe some animal sounds - but all pretty unclear. Much more interested in running around being a plonker. Didn't start talking till over 2 and then it came like a wave. He was very unclear until he was 4 though. He's in secondary now and the most emotionally intelligent, happy bright child.

second child - talking by 18 months. Doesn't stop talking ever. I mean ever. Much more serious. Will probably be a despot.

third child 19 months - says mummy, daddy, no, yes, woof woof (but more like weird heavy breathing) and good girl. Much more physical than second child.

But at 18 months they all seemed to understand what I was saying and made attempts to communicate - like pointing, moaning, laughing, would follow simple instructions (If I said, get your shoes, or do you want some banana?_

Honestly, at 18 months I wouldn't worry - unless you have other concerns. Wait till nearer 2.
